I heard he did try to run but was tackled for a 2 yard loss and unfortunately fumbled the beer bottle.

Lighten up. He made a mistake and now will pay a lesser consequence for his actions than the rest of society does. The difference is that he only gets suspended for a game or three and stays in school, while the poor schmuck working for a living, like a truck driver, loses his job and income.

Until Mack Brown decides to go to a no tolerance policy, then the DWI's will coninue. Read campus watch and quit being surprised when this happens.

Drinking and driving IS an egregious crime. When you think of the innocent children who have been killed over the years by drunk drivers then it should begin to sink home that this act (drinking and driving) has been whitewashed by society for far too long.

Didn't say they should be kicked out of school and I don't believe they be kicked out of school just like I don't believe people should lose their jobs because of a DWI. I pointed out Vondrell is in a better position as he DOESN'T get kicked out of school versus people that would lose their jobs and income due to a DWI. The criminal part is the same, the non criminal consequences are in his favor.
Whether or not Vondrell or any other student should continue to recieve benefits from UT after breaking the rules is the point of contention. There should be no tolerance on this issue resulting in him being booted from the team and his scholorship pulled if he is found guilty. He can stay in school just like any other student, just not on the athletic dime. Why? Because Vondrell is a 5th year senior and knew what the consequences were.(3 game suspension at most) Hence, until Mack Brown institutes a no tolerance policy including loss of scholorship and removal from the team, the DWI's will continue with no real consequences from the athletic department.

I do wonder or not whether other students are treated equally under these circumstances.

I actually do not know if academic sholorships can be pulled due to DWI convictions or felony convictions. I also do not know if other student positions such as student body president can have their postions stripped from them ,recieve a 3 day suspension or have no action taken at all if they recieve a DWI or felony conviction.

I have never had a DWI/DUI, but I have known people that have and from what I hear it is a costly ordeal in money and time with the fine, attorney fees and usually community service of one sort, or another.

Thank God no one was injured, or worse. Hopefully he learns a lesson and doesn't repeat his mistake. Lessons with no casualties can be a good thing.

There used to be a late night shuttle service for drunk students from 6th street back to campus when I was at UT in the late 90's. Does that still exist?

But that wouldn't help if he was coming from somewhere else.

"The school or the city or someone should offer up free rides home for student-athletes just to avoid this kind of mess. Not to mention it would ensure that a) our athletes are kept relatively safe (e.g. not driving while under the influence) and b) also a way of keeping a internal & private record of athlete behavior, should it begin to become a very common occurrence with an individual. "

We tried to set this up in the mid 90s

"This would be a clear NCAA violation, as it would be a financial benefit offered only to student athletes. You'd have to offer the same program to all UT students, and that's not going to happen. "

It would have been free for all registered students (so no NCAA violation). We had corporate sponsors lined up to contribute just under $95,000 per year. UT Safe Ride Home declined. The free busses from 6th to campus were a compromise.

    4th_floor Dude, where's my laptop?

This continues to happen because the punishment is not severe enough. Give him his due process. If he is truly guilty of DWI - Send him packing - for good. Let him finish his career at Cougar High or Sam Houston State. Mack needs to show his players that they will no longer be able to sully the reputation of the University.

This continues to happen because Mack is in charge of 120 college age males.

It shouldn't be minimized, but it shouldn't be made into a capital offense.
You can tell people over and over the right way to behave, but at that age, it is difficult to have it sink in unless you make your own mistakes. This is a painful learning experience, but no one was injured, thankfully, so let the coaches decide the appropriate punishment.
Forty thousand college kids out partying on weekends-bound to be some mistakes made. I made my share (fortuneately never got a DWI), maybe some of you never made any, from your comments.

All of you people judging Vondrell need to get a life. DWI law is mostly ******** and MADD and the police who enforce it are out of control. Until we know the actual facts of what happened, I'm inclined to believe that the cop was just a ******** who thought he would make an arrest because he saw someone driving with their headlights off at 3am. We don't know how long Vondrell was driving or what the lighting conditions and traffic were like. There are plausible explanations for having the headlights off (such as, not realizing theyre off due to ample street light), none of which include "OMG HE WAS DRUNK." There is otherwise no indication whatsoever that he was driving unsafely.

It is a fact that breathalyzers are inaccurate and that field sobriety tests are subjective ********. It is also a fact that an arresting officer will ALWAYS say that he "smelled alcohol" and that the detainee's "eyes were bloodshot" even if it's not true. Every time I read about a DWI arrest it makes me sick due to the amount of police corruption generally involved with it.

Judging people judging people judging ...

Don't drink and drive and you probably won't have a problem being falsely accused by the police. I don't do the former and have never experienced the latter, but I am glad they are there if and when I need them. I'll take a somewhat overzealous cop on the road over a drunk driver any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
