Saying this years staff is the best this early is like saying the mens basketball team was the best ever when they were 17 - 0. Way too early, right now they don't compare to some of the previous staffs because they have not done anything this year. Wasn't there a year when Roger Clemens was like the 3rd best pitcher for UT? That year would be hard to beat IMO.

I agree with the posters who say that it is too early to say something like this. Look at it again in May.

BUT, one thing I think that we can say is that Ruffin is having a great season so far . He lowered is ERA to .31 last night.

With 6 wins and 4 losses over the last 10 games, this team is in a slump. So far the "best pitching staff" isn't doing their part (e.g., considering they've allowed 30 runs in the 4 losses).

Thread was premature ... but tonight was sick.

Jungmann and Ruffin were on point.

UCLA plays in a much tougher conference. The Big 12 is historically overrated outside Texas. And the Pac-10 is loaded this year.

UCLA had a terrible game last night though.

Texas is right there, not saying they aren't. I just think UCLA has the best overall pitching and best prospects.

I know Texas will be in Omaha as a serious contender for the NC. UCLA should be there, I think they will be. However, it would be so typical if the Bruins fell flat on their faces. That program is notorious for wasting talent.

UCLA lost this tuesday to CS Long Beach 5-16 and that really screwed up their ERA. Otherwise, as of this weekend, we had only just edged ahead of UCLA for the best ERA in the nation for the first time this year. Sometimes ERA can be misleading due to one or two poor games when everything goes wrong.

UCLA has gone 5-6 in their last 11 games though. Before the bloodbath by CSULB, they had pitched OK for around a 3 ERA in the previous 10 games though. Losses to Staford, Fullerton, Oregon State etc. Their batting has been quite a bit better than ours with over 300 for the team, but that has come down a bit in the last 10 games too.

Anyway, UCLA is not the only other good team out there. Let us focus on what we are doing.

Our pitching seem really good for now, if Ruffin (the ERA leader in the nation after the weekend) hasn't run into any problems. He has not been mowing them down the last couple of outings..

As Thorp sid, let us not jinx anything. Lots of baseball to come, and we do not have the luxury to lose more than 2 or 3 games from here on out to stay in the top-10 of ERA and get a top-8 seed. Our RPI is being hurt by the Big12's being down this year. We need to stay focussed.
