Just flipped on ESPN2 right now (quarter to the hour) in the middle of Mike & Mike, with another Mike.. .Holmgren... in Cleveland (show on site). And just caught the last part of Holmgren talking about Colt....

The point said by Holmgren is that Colt is not ruled out playing this year. It's not the plan to rush him into action, but it's not a closed door. Was saying something to the effect... if a situation presented itself into the season... and so forth.

Anybody who heard the whole thing and has better word-memory than me, please proceed.

The trailing sentences I heard were speaking well about our man, Colt.

A problem today on ESPN programming... I do not see the early afternoon Best of Mike and Mike... looks like college volleyball takes up a stretch and bumps that out, otherwise there would be a short repeat that might carry the conversation. Or... find it online I guess.

I think it is going to take time for Colt to learn that West Coast system. Learning to make all the right reads will take even longer. He wasn't necessarily the best at that last year and I think it will be his biggest area of opportunity. Hope he doesn't start for a year and gets a chance to study and train. Then they can get another high draft pick in 2011 draft and give him some more help on offense.

Colt seems like he ought to be able to absorb new info like a sponge. And now he's going to be away from Austin, no classes to go to, out of the big spotlight that a 4-yr starting QB at Texas becomes, away from the state with parents, friends, etc. (except Jordan will be working just down state from him, probably some good fishing holes in rural Ohio).

He can concentrate solely on learning the new system with few distractions. A great opportunity.

In a way, imagine if Dallas had wanted him and got him? In the Metroplex, still in Texas, too many distractions IMHO.

He's in a perfect place with a perfect mentor.

    Great scenario for Colt:

    1. Don't play much or at all in 2010 and learn the system.

    2. Browns fire Eric Mangini at end of 2010 season.

    3. Mike Holmgrem takes over as coach for the Browns.

interesting that before they actually got their hands on colt, it was 'no way he plays this year.'

    : )

If he is their QBof the future
If they win 4-5 games this year (vegas numbers)

Why not have Colt start the last 2-3 games minimum to get experience.

I'm still in the camp that it's a possible clusterf**k of a situation in Cleveland. You have a coach on the ropes, and a proven former coach trying to make a name for himself as team president, who is also trying to assert himself into the development of players. this seems like a bad situation for Colt to me. Holmgren should have chosen a coach that would work with him (Holmgren) to coach THIS year. Mangini isn't going to produce results that Holmgren wants, and Colt is going to be caught in the middle of that storm.

To be fair, Holmgren never said there was "no way" Colt would play in 2010. The media turned it into that because they needed to make a story out of this.

Holmgren said that from the minute they drafted Colt, they didn't intend for him to play in 2010 because they thought it would be better for him to spend the year watching and learning. But he also said Mangini would make the final call and that the QBs' performance in practice would play a role in the decision.

I think Holmgren is having to come back now and clarify for the idiot talking heads and sportswriters that he didn't mean it was an impossibility for Colt to play ... just that he hopes Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace can get the job done so that Colt doesn't have to be rushed into anything.

fair schmair. fair is for the lame and halt. n/s i bought the media balogna unsliced and still wrapped.

you guys talking about colt selected by the major domo with a coach in a weak position. what is it with our qbs getting into that sort of situation? i hope colt doesn't have to go through what big vince had to go through.

    n/s = not serious

ps: i agree that colt would likely benefit from an unpressured opportunity to learn. hope that happens.

I hope this works out for him. He'll be holding the clipboard while listening to the playcalls through his helmut speakers.

He can learn a lot from the older QBs in practice and in the film room.

I like the idea of not rushing him into a starting role. This was how it was traditionally done in the NFL for years. Now, rookie QBs are expecting to start. Even the best of them struggle their first year or two. I remember Troy Aikman's rookie year when he started and it was painful.
