I like most of the stuff that Stephen King puts out, but now and then he misses the target completely. I loved Duma Key, but I'm giving up on Under the Dome. That bastard of a book is way too long and has too many effin' characters. Doesn't King have an editor? I'm giving up halfway through and switching over to a Lee Child - Jack Reacher book to wash my mind clean. However, I am curious as to where the Dome came from, its purpose, etc. Yes, I could just skip over to the very last chapter, but sometimes key plot turns or revelations occur before the last chapter or two.

I quit on Stephen King after suffering through The Tommyknockers. It was as sorry a piece of **** as ever I've read. He used to be a master of horror, but it got to where every novel involved aliens from outer space, and that got real old, real fast.

And I cannot stand reading his column in Entertainment Weekly. It's tripe.

I'm currently reading "the Stand", which weighs in at a hefty 1263 pages (the unabridged version). Thank God I have it on Kindle. So far no aliens, so I'm ok with it. It's the only King novel I have ever read. I'm only reading it because I've heard the creators of Lost have said it was an inspiration for their series.

the mini-series is faster to watch but you will have to deal with an old, strange looking molly ringwald, mr. hand, a mute rob lowe and the big slow witted assistance coach from the tv show coach.

The Stand is a great book, one that I have actually re-read many times. The movie was horribly miscast, imho, except for the guy who played Tom, that spells m-o-o-n. I couldn't watch the movie because they all looked so different than they had in my head!
Stick with it, it won't let you down like some of his 8 pounders
    .
He actually writes some pretty good short stories if you like scary books you might try one of books filled with those.

There is also one that has 3 novellas, The Walk (great read) one about school shootings before there were such a thing (also good) and the 3rd I can't remember! It might have been the Running Man which was so differerent and better than the movie.

I agree that the Stand is probably the best SK work out there...and I read everything he published, from Carrie until he had his accident...and some since. Here are a few others I consider to be classics.

    Series:
    The Green Mile

    Novellas:
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption
    The Body(Stand By Me)
    The Mist

    As Richard Bachman:
    The Running Man
    Thinner

Yeah, I suppose if you don't mind wading some 1,250 pages through a book only to have the author drop his pants and crap on your face for the ending, The Stand qualifies as a good read. IT was just as disappointing in that respect.

King is adept at setting the stage and giving the reader something to care about. Following through on that concern? Not so much.
