I had a high school English teacher that was a very good friend of his at UT. My father-in-law also passed away that same day. My wife to be was 12 years old at the time.
I was at the Cotton Bowl when we played Theismann and Notre Dame in 1970 and remember Freddie on crutches on the sideline. A true Longhorn until the end.
in '69 i was 17...i still remember...i still get a lump in my throat & a tear in my eye. hook 'em Freddie...you have long been my favorite Longhorn & you will always be. my leg was amputated 9 years after Freddie's (with a much more positive outcome) & he has been a mentor since '69.
First time I've read that article. Thanks pop999. Even though I was 3 yrs old at the time, this story still goes down as one of huge magnitude in my Longhorn pride.
I read his book at the start of football season every year. It is an inspiration. Freddie will never really be gone as long as there are true Longhorns.
