varnishing or treating a staircase

    hi - i have a wooden platform and stairs leading down to the ocean/beach at my house. The wood is in good shape but doesnt apper to be treated or anythign and im worried it needs to be treated or painter or something or it will decay

    what do you guys reccomend? How much will I need? here's a bad picture that ort of shows what I need to work on

    Is it marine grade wood (pressure treated)?

    I would use a solid color (opaque) wood stain and then might attach something for grip on top of the treads.

    You can mix sand into some coatings for a nonslip surface.

    Consumer Reports does a lot of testing of deck coatings and the opaque coatings stand up far better than the transparent/translucent ones in general. You'd have to consult their results for specific brands that perform well, though.
