Nothing much to report except that Charlie is doing terrible so far [IMG] ... 247sports has our class listed at #21 right now, and we will never ever catch TCU who are at #3 and Baylor at #7. It is the same old crap. Does Charlie even know how to recruit? Aggy was #2 by summer last year and we were pushing toward #20... You can't fall behind like that.... Wait... what?... You mean it went all right last time?

Anyway, currently TCU is at #3 with 5 four-star recruits and 3 three-star guys. Baylor is at #7 with even a 5-star (OT Patrick Hudson) and 4 three-stars. But the prevailing feeling in recruiting circles seems to be that about half of these guys will probably move later, as aggy and Texas starts moving in harder. When you have such successful programs like BU and TCU offering you, you may as well take it up and then wait to see if the bigger name programs will court you hard with the right pitches on playing time and fit. So it is understandable. For a little perspective, WVU was around #7 at this time last year and fell to below 35 in the end.

A&m is at #17 with one 5-star (OT Greg Little of Allen HS, who is Kyler's cousin). Aggy had a junior day on the Jan 23rd weekend which was a bit of a dud, as they were preoccupied with the Charlie attack and had no time to go hard after anybody (with 3 top invitees being no-shows). But aggy will get going soon too.

We currently have two top-150 4-star WR commits (both top-100 on scout) in Colin Johnson (Johhnnie's son) and Regggie Hemphil-Mapp, and a 3-star who is expected to finish as a 4-star, LB Demarco Boyd.

We need at least 2 or 3 DTs and at least 3 OLs next time, along with a couple of safeties and of course a good QB. At other positions, we can take some risks and go for top talents, even if we miss some lower guys because of that.

It will be a smaller class for us next time. As of today, if we sign up no other players till next January, and no attrition happens, we can only pick up 15 players, to stay at 85 or below in total. But that will change. At least about 5 players are expected to be lost on attrition (a couple of Charlie dismissals and the rest transfers, probably) and may be 1 or 2 of the LOI players may not make it in, due to grade issues by June (Ronnie Major being the most probable one). Plus maybe an underclassman could declare for the draft like a Ridgeway or somebody. Generally I expect about 20 to 23 or so spots available next year (one of which will go to Merrick). Working with the assumption of 20 spots looks rather safe for now.

Our junior day was supposed to be next Saturday, as of even last week, but is now postponed to Feb 28th. I will soon post a list of names that appear to be generally confirmed for the junior day.

Man what's the DT class looking like for 2016 in Texas? We need some DTs since we only signed one for 2015 and we lose Tank to graduation and Ridgeway possibly to the NFL if he decides to go early. Is Ed Oliver worth a look?

    Offence 1QB, 1RB, 1TE, 3OL and 2WR already commited.
Defence 1DE, 1DT, 1-2 More LBS, 1CB and 1 Safety. Any other space should be to attrition where some one left IMO.

I made a spreadsheet of top-50 Texas players (as per the 247 industry-composite rankings) and their rankings by the 4 main rating-services (rivals, scout, ESPN and 247). Here they are, followed by others offers we have, both in-state and out-of state. These are the offers I know of, as of now. Texas offers are in orange and commits are in green. Hopefully this will be handy for everybody to see where things stand as of now. Lots more offers to be made but our coaches will wait a bit, as spots are fewer and some positions like WR, RB and CB are not big priorities.

The top 4 or 5 from Texas are expected to be 5 star recruits. It is the "year of the safeties". Among the OOS offers, the two QB offers Henrry and Patterson are 5-stars. The Texas top 40 are fairly safe to be 4-stars (as most of these guys shouldn't drop below a national top-400. Typically the final list of a Texas top-50 would all be 4-stars. Count the OOS top-300 (composite ranking) as 4-stars.

Some other notes. Greg Little, who will be a top-3 (if not #1) recruit in the country is Kyler Murray's cousin. Flipping him out of A&M would be tough, though if Kyler goes to baseball or something, anything is possible. We have a good shot at Brandon Jones, five-star safety who is #3 in Texas currently.

We need DTs. Though not impossible, Ed Oliver may prove to be tough at DT for us (due to some issues with some gentleman associated to Spring Westfield HS, the same place that as a minimum did not discourage Weathersby from decommitting from us). We have been on Kendall Jones for quite a while and have a high chance on him. He was sky-high on us when he came early last year, then cooled off a bit but apparently it should pick up again. Not sure how high on Texas Erick Fowler (DE) is, but he is literally from Austin, so we should get him somehow. we have offered 4-star DT Michael Willaims and probably may be leading for him. Good that this is a good year for DTs in Texas, just when we absolutely must get some 2 or 3 of them.

OT Patrick Hudson could possibly be flipped from Baylor but that may not be easy either, because he likes a smaller town or what not, as I read somewhere.

On the quarterback front, this is not a great year at all for QBs in Texas. we are in good shape with th best on the board, Shane Buechele. Everybody wants us to get She Patterson from Louisiana, but that dude has been a big LSU lean, as his brother had a job there, and now is becoming a big Ole Miss lean, as his brother got hired there. The offer to 5-star Malik Henry in California may not get too far, but the offer to Dwayne Haskins in Maryland has a chance to get somewhere. Actually I saw a tweet from Haskins a couple of weeks ago, ""Can't wait for Texas!" (I think he is coming fro our junior day; will try to confirm). The other QB name to keep an eye on, is Xavier Gaines (Dual threat) ranked around #150 in the composite rankings. From Frostproof, Florida. We haven't offered but he is Cecil Cherry's cousin, so we are automatically in it! Tristen Wallace could possibly flipped from Texas Tech, and he is actually very good too.

Do not pay attention to Collin Johnson's ranking. The rating services are out of their mind. Do they even look at some of these guys from Northern California? Watch his junior film, and one would wonder how the heck Collin Johnson shouldn't be ranked top-50 (actually he should be a top-30 five-star, but that's just my feeling).

We seem to be very high on Jeffrey McCulloch, at LB, maybe even more than Dontavious Jackson, who is ranked quite a bit higher. But look at McCulloch's offers, and one would think the coaches know more than the recruiting services.

Running back Devwah Whaley seems to be more sought-after than his rankings show. We may start to lead on that guy now, because he is from PJ Locke's school and they are big friends.

We made a curious offer to Lil'Jordan Humphrey, who so far has got only into ESPN top-300 rankings and is kinda unknown. Quite an athlete. Could be one of the Charlie specials this time, I guess.

^^ I think the ones I have in orange above are the ones we have offered so far (about 31 of them). Need to check if there are any others, but I doubt it.

I had missed a couple of names at first, We have offered Justin Madubuike at WDE and Kyle Porter at RB. Both are pretty high on us for now. EDIT: We have offered CB Jared Mayden also. I just made those lines orange above.

Two other names who may have offers from us are 5-star top-25 OT Ben Cleveland (Georgia commit), and the fast-rising top-40 DT Derek Brown, both from Georgia. I saw Colt Barber at horns247 list them this weekend but I haven't seen much discussion on them, so I'm not sure.

I would think we will make another round of offers by the Feb 29th junior day.

I remember seeing video on Lil' Jordan Humphrey, but I can't remember where. He is a 6'5" RB who is really quick and runs like a much smaller back. Even though he looks skinny, he seems to have some power and can break some tackles. I'd offer him as an ATH and see how big he gets. I think he's a very intriguing player and may turn out freakishly good.

Edit: Highlights Lil' Jordan Humphrey, 6-5, 195 RB.

And it starts... Christian Wallace, top-150 four-star athlete (probably safety) just decommitted from TCU, as per his twitter. He has an offer from us and Colt Barber (horn247) and Brian Perroni (aggy247) just CBed him to Texas. All the same old stuff just like last year. Christian was waiting for us at hornfans to get going with the 2016 recruiting, to decommit. Oh yes, 2016 recruiting has started [IMG]

jayakris what about our kicking situation? I feel it is important to have a good punter and place kicker for obvious reasons.

  17. jayakris

    jayakris 2,500+ Posts

I think punting by itself was not as big an issue as we felt. The real problem was with coverage, which hopefully will get fixed with much better talented depth to play ST and a single coach handling ST next year. On kicking, Nick Rose was quite fine in the end. He was 11-3 in the last 14 kicks with about 5 or 6 kicks from beyond 45 yards, including a game winner kick. He has serious leg to kick for touchbacks too. He did poorly in his first few kicks, going 3-4, that's all. I think Nick Jordan is on scholarship and available for 2016 too, so, I suspect kicker and punter are not priorities. I won't be surprised if they pick a kicker in the end though. Anyway, I have not seen anything about any offers to kickers/punters.

Another offer went out yesterday. And it's another one that our staff has evaluated to be of much higher quality at the LB position than the recruiting services have. We still haven't offered the Texas top-20 LB Dontavius Jackson, but made an offer to a 3-star (in the lower end of the Texas top-100), Jordan Carmouche of Manvel. He is currently ranked around #700 in the nation on 247's industry composite ranking.

He has 9 offers so far, including Missouri and Arkansas, so people have noticed him. He seemed thrilled like a puppy at the offer, at his twitter. Now Baylor has also offered today, but they are a day late on Charlie!

4-star top-200 WR Tren'Davian Dickson just decommitted from Baylor. Probably not one we will try to get in on, as we seem to have a full plate we working on at WR, and probably will only take one more of them. But, we may stay in touch with him though. He's pretty good.

Jay, he (Navasota's Tren'Davian Dickson) said "the Horns would be in strong shape if they would offer." We just offered! [IMG] He also said he's a big fan of Charlie Strong.

He caught 39 TD's last year as a junior setting a HS national record. This kid can play.
