Re: the union stuff being discussed—
Some unions were friendly to the communists and even had card carrying communists and fellow travelers among their leadership, such as the ILWU (longshoremen/dock workers on the West Coast), the farm workers union in California, and some of the miners unions. The IWW (Wobblies) were communists.
Other unions were not friendly at all towards the communists, such as the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Union and sometimes the Steelworkers Union. Although Truman and the Steelworkers butted heads during a strike when the Korean War was going on. Truman brought in the Army. Moscow probably liked that, but I don’t think the Steelworkers were commies. Certainly not the rank and file.
At least one union was violently hostile towards the communists and leftists in general, and took every available opportunity to (literally) bash their skulls in—the Teamsters. Some say there was a point where they functioned as a sort of informal private army for Nixon and some organized crime figures back then.
