Herman's been cherry picking the cream of the crop from Greater Houston, but some say he's been lagging in the DFW area. Having coached at UH and having significant HS coaching contacts in the Houston area, this only makes sense for his first few years here. With his background, Herman couldn't fairly be expected to own N. Texas right off the bat. The way I see it, it's now time to shift to a higher gear to get the top recruits in N. Texas, while maintaining top dog status in Houston, and cherry picking 6-10 nationwide (with special emphasis on CA, AZ, LA, FLA).
To file in the 'somewhere else to look' category: I'd like us to give the creme of the crop recruits from Hawaii a fair look--they produce some very high-end linemen and LBs. Where's Akina when you need him?
Saying you need Duane Akina is like saying you need cancer. I have posted many times over the years that the guy is a cancer that MD Snderson can’t cure. Did he have good DBs? Sure, but Mack gave him 4-5 four and five stars a year. Grandma Moses could have put those kids in the NFL. His disruptive influence far outweigh his accomplishments. Only time I want to see him in Austin is on the opponent’s sideline.
Over the course of a 4 year period, if you take the top players from the greater Houston area exclusively you can win a national championship with the right coaching. Because I don't subscribe to hyperbole you could also say the same thing about DFW or the Miami area and probably the Los Angeles area as well. Go ahead and throw Atlanta in there too.

Since U of I appears to be in play, wouldn't it be great if he was on an unofficial visit in Illinois right about now (for a taste of the weather). That's what students live with 4-5 months out of the year up there. Might as well combine it with a trip to Michigan this weekend if Big Blue is on his radar.

Explain what you meant because to me you are saying if you had your pick of Harris county you would win every game. I said you were wrong. If Barry Switzer said this also, then he was wrong as well. It's a argument that has no level being remotely true. LSU has the state of Louisiana locked up pretty tight, but even they need guys from other places because they know they can't just win with Louisiana players. The State of Louisiana has about 4.6 million residents, and Houston has 6 million residents. However Louisiana produces way more players than any state per capita. Yes, they produce more than Houston. I will even go so far as to say that if you had your pick of all the best players in the state of Texas, it wouldn't be enough to always win every game.
Film looks very solid. A bit tougher to gauge than normal with the talent level he's going against down there. Measurable factors (Ht., Wt., Bench, Squat, 40, agility drills, camps if any, etc.) may play a larger role than normal. I would never write off any recruit based on where he's from. He can't help it where he plays, and he's obviously tearing it up down there.
For the college game, I'm in the dual-threat QB is the way to go camp. Need a good dual-threat QB in every recruiting class. Henderson's the powerful sort of dual threat QB who runs a lot like Sam--pushes the pile forward 5 yards, runs over people, etc. Roschon Johnson's the super-quick sort of dual threat QB. Interesting contrast. Would be good to have both on our team.
I like this DE. Bigger, stronger-type DEs are a necessary component of a 3-4 defense. Of course, some DEs that are 225-230 as recruits, may be 275+ by the time they're Jrs. and starting. LSU seems to regularly trot out 290 lb + DEs that can still really move. Such DEs exist. Even in the pass-happy Big 12, you need some brawn at the DE positions if you run a 3-4. The ideal type of players for the 3-4 defensive front =/= the ideal type of players for the 4-3 defensive front. We've recruited for the 4-3 front for so many decades. Texas meant a 4-3 defense, it's just who we were. It's taking some time to get the right sort of athletes in there and developed for the 3-4 team that we find ourselves in this new era.

Here's what Switzer said as to why it would be "a hell of a mistake" letting Houston in the Big Xll, an opinion shared by Gundy and I'd imagine every other coach that does this for a living: "They've got better players in Harris County than anywhere else in the United States. I always said if I could get the top 30 players out of Houston every year, I'd play for the national championship every year." And you can't be serious saying that about taking your pick of the top players in the State of Texas every year.
Lets play a game, you name the top 30 players from Texas each of the last 4 years, and I will name each of the top 30 players in the rest of the united states over the last 4 years, and lets see who has the better team.

Roschon has never shyed away from running over a defender nor laying the wood when playing defense. I would invite you to call the coaches at Crosby, Barbers Hill, Nederland, Port Arthur, et al. That's why I posted over a year ago that was worried because when I saw him in Market Basket, he looked thin. He has since added weight & muscle without losing speed.
Here's how I see it: Watching Roschon's all star game film, what jumped out at me most was his lightning quickness and speed. He was leaving all star defenders in the dust when he'd take off on a scramble. I don't doubt he could power through quite a few defenders, but that won't be the strength of his game at the college level. He will hold significant quickness and speed advantages againt most defenders who try to corral him and can use that to his advantage. IMHO that will be his strength in the college game. Sam and Roschon are two different types of runners--each can be highly effective. Sam is quick and fast enough, and very powerful. Perhaps Roschon is powerful enough, and very quick and fast. Glad to have both on our team.
