2024-2025 Season

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

As we wrap up our Fall Season, and take a little break for Thanksgiving I thought I would check in with some program updates:

Our performance last week at the NCAA individual tournament was highlighted by Timo Legout reaching the singles semifinals, and partnering with Lucas Brown to reach the doubles semifinals. With those results, Timo secured All American status in both singles and doubles, and Lucas wrapped up that honor in doubles. Timo also guaranteed himself a spot in the ATP/ITA Accelerator Program. Unfortunately, both Timo and Lucas got hit with a bad stomach bug during the event, and Timo had to retire after just 5 games in the semifinals. Jonah Braswell lost a heartbreaker in the first round, but played a very good match, while Sebastian Gorzny advanced to the 2nd round after being out of action since September's run to the final of the ITA All American. For more details on the week that Timo and Lucas had, please click on this press release.

Meanwhile back in Austin the rest of our players played in the Dropshot Series $25k ITF Pro Tennis tournament at the Texas Tennis Center. One of the highlights for the week was Evan Burnett's run to the quarterfinals, which included a big win over #1 seed and ATP #343 Toby Kodat. And a special shout out goes to Pierre-Yves Bailly for winning his first pro doubles title, and reaching the singles final (coming up just 1 win short of defending last year's singles title). It was definitely a great finish to the Fall season for Pierre!

We are also very happy to announce two great additions to our program! Oliver Ojakaar (Estonia) will, along with previously announced Sebastian Eriksson, join us in January for the upcoming dual match season. Oliver was one of the top juniors in the world (ranked #10 in the ITF rankings), and is a US Open Junior Doubles Champion. Mariano Dedura-Palomero (Germany) will join us next fall. He has focused primarily on ITF Men's Circuit events over the last few years, and has demonstrated significant success at that level. We expect both of them to be difference makers for the Longhorns! Please click on today's press release for more detail on Oliver and Mariano.

And we are not quite done yet! Beginning on Friday, Sebastian Gorzny will represent the United States at the annual Master U Competition in France. Based on his unpublished #1 national singles ranking heading into last week, he was selected as 1 of 3 male players for Team USA. Stay tuned to our website over the weekend for updates, but here is a link to the results and live scoring page for the event.

Have a great holiday season! And Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

We may get a sneak peek at maya joint facing Mary stoiana at the masterU event this weekend. Should be exciting. Also excited to Gorzny get a chance to shine at Texas as one of the top players in college. The masterU event should be great experience for him. I’m not sure how all these fall events work now but hope he gets a chance at the accelerator program

Maya vs Mary, not to be at the MasterU BNP. It'll be US vs GBR.

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving!

Sebastian Gorzny was the only Longhorn competing last week, as he was part of Team USA and competed in the Master'U BNP Paribas Championship in France. Sebastian was an integral part of the team's 5th straight run to the title, winning both of his singles matches, and all 3 of his doubles matches. Here is a link to the full recap. Meanwhile in Mexico, recent graduate Cleeve Harper finished the year with another Challenger title, this time in Manzanillo, Mexico. Cleeve has now gotten his ATP doubles ranking up to #159 after only 6 months on tour!

Thanks for your ongoing interest in UT Men's Tennis. I will be back in touch with you again soon. All the best, and Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Hope he find a good program to get playing time. I’m always a fan of these student athletes that come. He fit the culture and team dynamics well. Got a chance to train with the best of college tennis and now has a chance to take his skills and improvement to make a difference to a program.

Calvin Wang in the transfer portal. Smart move for he probably wouldn't see much playing time this Spring.

Preseason rankings have been posted, men #1 and women #7! Unsure if the women's ranking included Maya participating this Spring or not.

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

Happy New Year! Our team is back on campus, and we started training together a few days ago. I have been very happy to see that everyone came back in good health, in good shape, and in good tennis form. We are excited that two new players are joining us as freshmen this semester, Sebastian Eriksson (Sweden) and Oliver Ojakaar (Estonia). They are both outstanding players, and great fits with our culture.

Although we lost 6 seniors to graduation and 1 to professional tennis from last year's team, we have been ranked the #1 ranked team in the country in the preseason poll. This is now the 4th season out of the last 7 that we have risen to the top spot in the rankings. While we recognize that it is the journey and where we finish that are more important than where we start, it is still nice recognition for the program.

Our dual match season opens this weekend with matches against Lamar (1 pm on Saturday) and Abilene Christian (11 am on Sunday). Although we have had a cold snap the last few days, the weather should be nice this weekend, and we expect both matches to be outside at the Texas Tennis Center. Our 3rd match of the season will be on Wednesday, January 15 at 4pm against UTRGV. All matches will be streamed live, and you can find the links here.

In news of our recent graduates, Eliot Spizzirri won his first tournament of 2025, picking up the doubles title at the $150k Challenger in Canberra, Australia. This week he picked up a singles win over #205 Alexander Blockx in the first round of The Australian Open qualifying. Micah Braswell also picked up a good win yesterday at a Challenger in Portugal, taking out #243 Beibit Zhukayev. Cleeve Harper is in the 2nd round of doubles in Portugal, and progressing fast through the doubles rankings.

Hope to see you at the courts this weekend. Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

I hope you had a great weekend! Our team performed well over the weekend, and picked up two shutout wins to clinch our spot in the National Team Indoor Championship in a few weeks. For more details, please click on the Rice press release and the Georgia Tech press release. Next up for us is our first road trip of the season, as we will head to Charlottesville for a top 5 match up with UVA on Sunday at 11:30 am eastern. After UVA it will be another top 5 match up (#1 Texas vs #2 TCU), this time at home at the Weller Tennis Center at 5:30 pm on Friday, February 7. This will be a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Championship final! We are planning to take the first court out of play and set up additional bleachers. Although we will be doubling our normal seating capacity, I still encourage you to get there early if you'd like to watch the match. Our promotions team is planning some special things, and we are expecting to blow our indoor attendance record out of the water. Please mark your calendars now for Friday, February 7 at 5:30 pm at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center at the UT Golf Club in Steiner Ranch. If you are out of town or country you will be able to watch the live streams.

I will be back in touch towards the end of this week, as we get a little closer to match day vs Virginia. Until then, have a great week, and Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

In front of over 600 people at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center last night, we defeated TCU by the score of 4-1 in a rematch of last season's national championship After a dramatic comeback win in doubles, we got off to a quick start in singles and maintained our edge all the way through. At the time of the clinch we had an early lead in the 3rd set at #5 singles, and were up 5-0 in the first set at #6 singles. For a detailed recap of the big win over TCU, please click on this press release.

Next up for us is a trip up to Dallas for the National Team Indoor Championship, which begins on Friday. I will be back in touch with more details once the draw and schedule are released. Thanks for all of your suppor!. Enjoy your Superbowl Sunday! Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Texas gets the #3 seed and plays #6 seed A&M on Friday at SMU in the NCAA Indoor Championships. These seeds are just for the 1 side of the bracket.

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

I hope you are staying warm! We just got back from The National Indoor Championships, and were looking forward to moving on to our outdoor season, but a cold snap has slammed Austin, and it looks like our 1 pm Saturday match vs Vanderbilt will be inside at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center. That match will be our first SEC Conference dual match, and we are hoping for another great crowd to help us start conference play on a positive note! The good news it that the weather is supposed to warm back up on Sunday, and it should be very nice for our 1 pm Monday match with Ole Miss (outdoors at the Texas Tennis Center). We realize that 1 pm on Monday is not an ideal time for many of our fans, but the SEC has assigned us this time, so we really do not have a say in the matter.

As you may know, we wrapped up a long weekend in Dallas with 4-1 wins over #14 Texas A&M (recap) and #5 Virginia (recap), before dropping a nail biter to #1 Wake Forest. For all the details of our semifinal match please click on this recap. Timo Legout, on the strength of his outstanding play at #1 singles, has been named SEC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week! The all tournament team should be released tomorrow, but I expect that Timo, Pierre-Yves Bailly, and Oliver Ojakaar (all undefeated in singles) will be recognized.

I'll be in touch again just before the Vanderbilt match with a final preview. Until then, have a great rest of your week, and Hook'em!
Sincerely,

Bruce Berque

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

I hope you had a great week! We play our first SEC Conference match tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 pm, against Vanderbilt at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center. Vanderbilt has a strong team, and we expect a very good match. Here is a full preview. We had over 600 fans last time we played at Weller (against TCU), and it was a big boost to our team. If you are in town, I hope you will plan on being there again! If you can't make it, you will be able to follow along via the live scoring and video streaming links on the preview.

After the Vanderbilt match, we are expecting the weather to warm up quickly. So it looks like a sure thing that we will be back outside at the Texas Tennis Center to take on Ole Miss on Monday at 1 pm. I realize that is a tough time, but we encourage you to come out to support if you can.

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Posting i made on another forum.

Read in another board that this might be Timo's only year of eligibility. I also read a comment in Instagram after the recent comment that Texas is going to need help come next year.

Any truth to Timo's eligibility?

Timo was a part of the program for some time now. I figured he would classify maybe as junior by the time he got to play as he was waiting for clearance. I don’t exactly know details or anything but I suspect the eligibility isn’t straightforward either so I doubt many have concrete details unless timo has stated he plans to be with program for one year

The women’s program needs to find an identity. They keep rotating the 4-6 often and 2 and 3 are very inexperienced. I feel like this is going to be rough year even though talent is there. Surprised ovrootsky doesn’t get more consistent playing time at 5 or 6

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

We capped off a successful weekend of SEC play yesterday, by picking up a 4-1 win over Auburn at the Texas Tennis Center in front of a very good crowd. Please click on this press release for all the details. We are now 14-2 for the season, and 5-0 in the SEC. Our next match will be this Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm against TCU in Ft. Worth. We beat TCU 4-1 at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center about a month ago, but we know that this next meeting will be a big challenge. This will be the 10th time we have played TCU in the last 3 years; we are 5-4 in the first 9. If you are able to make it we would love to see some friendly faces and burnt orange in the stands!

After the trip to Ft. Worth, we will be back at home on this coming Sunday, March 16 at 12 pm to take on Alabama at the Texas Tennis Center. We have only 3 more regular season home matches. We hope you will mark your calendars for all three, and plan on being there, and on bringing your friends. This year's team is once again a special one. Your support means more to them than you may realize!

Have a great week, and Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Hi UT Tennis Fan,
We picked up another SEC win yesterday, with a 4-0 decision over Alabama at the Texas Tennis Center. We played a very good match in doubles and singles to bring our record for the year to 15-3 (6-0 in the SEC). Please click here for all the details of yesterday's win. We will hit the road this coming weekend for matches against Arkansas on Friday and LSU on Sunday. Then it is back to Austin and the TTC for a big weekend (March 28 at 6 pm vs Kentucky, and March 30 at 12 pm vs South Carolina). Those will be the last two regular season matches of the year, and Sunday's match against South Carolina will be senior day for Pierre-Yves Bailly. We are expecting several alumni of the program to be back in town, and I'm sure you will enjoy seeing them. If you will be in town, please mark your calendars and plan on joining us. We will need all the help we can get against Kentucky and South Carolina, two of the better SEC teams, as we continue to compete for an SEC title!

Have a great week, and Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Men's Tennis is rolling.

Women's Tennis is struggling in a way that they never had before with Joffe. I know that Maya Joint not coming at the last minute hurt. But I do think we have a roster (albeit a young one) that should be doing better. Wonder if there's injuries. SEC isn't the strongest tennis conference either, but we're STRUGGLING...

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

I hope you had a great weekend! We got back late last night from a long SEC road trip, where we picked up a pair of hard fought wins, 4-1 over Arkansas (recap) on Friday, and 4-3 over LSU (recap) on Sunday. The wins moved our record to 17-3 for the season, and 8-0 in the SEC, with 6 regular season conference matches to go. Our last two scheduled home matches will be this weekend, when we will take on Kentucky on Friday, March 28 at 6pm, and South Carolina on Sunday, March 30 at 12 pm. These are two of the better teams in the conference, and it is going to take everything we have. If you are in town, we would sure appreciate you coming out, and recruiting all your friends to join you. Sunday's match will be senior day for Pierre-Yves Bailly, and he will be recognized for his outstanding contributions to the program just before the start of the match. So please plan on showing up by 11:45 am to make sure you get a good seat, and so you are there to pay tribute to PY!

If you can make it out Friday and Sunday, you will be sure to see many familiar faces, as it will be alumni weekend. UT men's tennis players of multiple generations, including last year's seniors Eliot, Eshan, Micah, Evin, and Siem, will be out to support the current squad. Rumor has it there may even be a GA Bailly sighting, as we are hoping he will be here to support his brother. It will be fun for you to come out, catch up with the formers, and help them root on this current team as it continues its quest for an SEC title!

Have a great week, and hope to see you this coming weekend! Hook'em!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque

Hi UT Tennis Fan,

It is time for me to update the graphic at the top of this e-mail, as we are once again conference champions, this time in the SEC! Picking up a pair of 4-1 rivalry road wins over the weekend (over the Sooners and the Aggies), we moved our SEC record to 12-0 (21-3 overall) and clinched the regular season conference championship. For all the details, please click on the Oklahoma recap, and the Texas A&M recap. It was a true team effort in both matches, as we continue to manage injuries, and have different players step up when needed. Against Oklahoma, it was redshirt freshman Evan Burnett who answered the call at #6 to clinch the overall team win, and bring his dual match singles record to 3-0 in the SEC. Against Texas A&M, Sebastian Gorzny clinched both the doubles point (with Jonah Braswell) and the overall team win at #2 singles, after missing singles against Oklahoma due to injury. Timo Legout and Pierre-Yves Bailly continue to lead the way in singles, as they have combined for a total of just 1 singles loss in SEC play this season!

We have two more regular season matches left, as we travel to Georgia (Friday at 6 pm) and Tennessee (Sunday at 1 pm) this weekend (times are eastern). The conference tournament will be the following weekend at the University of South Carolina. Then we will have a week off before the start of NCAA tournament play (we will host the first 3 rounds should we advance).

Thanks for your support, and have a great week!

Sincerely,
Bruce Berque
