It’s weird to see (nat’l rankings) #s 9 and 12 getting first round byes (Boise St and ASU) while #s 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 have to win another game (Texas, ND, OSU, Tenn and Indiana) to get in.

The conference championship games are clearly a liability now and incentivize a less competitive schedule, which no CFB fan wants to watch.

We need to incentivize bold matchups and reward the risk, even in a close loss scenario there should be the SOS benefit.

They should have byes for the #1 and #2 to the semifinal game. Same for #3 and #4 at the quarterfinal game, etc. In this way the regular season counts more. Rankings should be done by AP and computer rankings that use SOS. They had it right for the BCS.

Not playing between Dec 7 and Jan 1 appears to be a disadvantage. I think 16 teams in the playoffs makes sense. Oregon might have beem more competitive against Ohio State if it had a warmpup game vs Bama or Miami.

Funny how the teams with a BYE week, the playoffs said bye to them. Adios bro.

The top four seeds out. However, Georgia didn’t have its starting QB, and if the rankings were reseeded after that—ala FSU last year—they would not have been #2. ASU and BSU were not realistically top 4 seeds in the first place. That leaves Oregon, who ran into the tOSU buzz saw, which was not really even an upset to me, but with their record, Oregon had to get the top seed.

Yeah—they HAD to be the top seed, so no complaints, but I think tOSU was just better, and it wasn’t a shocking upset.

The Buckeyes look scary good right now
Agree, Dion. The Buckeyes got a wake-up call from Michigan, and it appears they took that wake-up call to heart and intensified their focus. OSU will be hard to beat - they're on a hot streak at the right time. Texas will have to play near-perfect football to have a chance to win.

At the end of the day, looking at AP, not "seeding," 4 of the Top 6 teams are still in. So I feel like it's playing out as it should. Just need to adjust the seeding imo.

Indiana and Tennessee were the only Top 10 teams to lose first round.

I like the playoffs. Maybe I'd do one less round...a 6 team playoff...

1 Oregon - Bye
2 Georgia - Bye

Dec 21 at home stadium
3v6 - osu @ Notre Dame
4v5 - psu @ Texas

new year's bowl game
1 Oregon v (4v5)
2 Georgia v (3v6)

Finals Jan 11th

But I'm ok with the playoffs.

I’ve enjoyed them too but feel like it’s too many games at 15. Never thought you’d ever hear me say that but something in my gut just says going past 13-14 games is too much on these kids.

Actually, I think we coulda/shouda been the #2 seed. We shoulda have beaten Georgia in the SEC CG .

First: Our Defense had a massive breakdown (failure) in the 2nd half against a rookie QB. Instead of pressuring him hard, they played soft zone and rarely blitzed him. Kirby Smart will be forever indebted to Pete for that.
Second: Our special teams had an even more massive failure. They were beaten by a fake punt which successfully kept a live a drive at midfield which eventually led to a score. And then Auburn missed not one, but TWO routine field goals. Either of which would have given the horns the win.
So, one could justifiably say that the second Georgia loss was an anomaly which should not have happened.

EXCEPT virtually the same thing happened in the ASU game. Our defense had another massive failure--allowing ASU to mount a comeback, scoring 16 4th quarter points to tie the game. Then, history repeated itself, our special teams got beat again by a fake punt, AND Auburn again missed two field goals which allowed the game to go into OT.

So, if Coach K learned anything about pressure and coming out hard in the second half remains to be seen. Also, no matter the yard line, did our special teams coach learn to ALWAYS be alert for the fake punt?

I have always thought for years that fake punts would easily be successful if you have a punter that can throw.
On a fourth and five for example: the runners on the out side charge down the field. They then stop on dime planting their feet come back to the ball. The defender's momentum will keep them moving downfield once they realize whats happening. It takes a lot of time to react by stopping and then going the other way. All the punter has to do is throw the ball with decent velocity, at the right time, chest level, and you have an 8 to 10 yard gain for a first down.
Why this play isnt done more often i dont know.
I just love the play design by ASU on their fake punt: moving the pocket over then letting one of the 3 blockers slip by the rushers. He is wide open with no defenders in front and he gallups down the sideline for long yardage. A thing of beauty.
Give ASU credit.

Well, I have a hard time giving them much credit because our special teams have not been good against fake punts. In fact, they gave up big gains multiple times. Our special teams should never be caught with their pants down. There’s no excuse for that. And running into the kicker gave asu a first down that led to points. These mistakes simply cannot happen at this level and still expect to win.
