2025 Recruiting - WBB

Remember Morgan Williams? Williams scored 41 points in the Elite Eight against Baylor in 2017. Mississippi State won 94-85 in OT. The same year, she hit the game winner against UConn to lead Mississippi State to the title game. Also in overtime. See The 15 highest-scoring individual performances in March Madness women's history | NCAA.com. I believe one Blair Shaefer was a somewhat frequent shooter of threes playing for Vic at MSU.
Exactly! There have been a number of players under Vic who he has allowed to let it fly WHEN he had the shooters. One could even argue that he allows Shay Holle and Jordan Lee the green light when they're open. In fact, in his first season at Texas we shot 509 3FG attempts including 13 of 34 against ISU in the Big 12 tournament. So... the argument that he DOESN'T ALLOW the 3-point shot doesn't hold water with me.

I hope I am wrong about where Chavez will go. I want her as bad as everyone else here does. T minus 3 days.:hookem:

In watching Schaefer’s press conference, he was asked about Lee and Preston. He effusively talked about them and that they were the guards of the future. Nothing special as he has routinely said similar in last few months. I’m trying to get some indication of his confidence in Chavez joining. Nothing. I guess the more times I hear him extolling the virtues of Preston, the more negative I get regarding Chavez. Realize he kinda has to take that approach……for various reasons that have been beat to death. Intellectually, Texas is the correct choice. Emotionally, I toggle between gloom, despair and agony on me……..and supreme confidence. THREE DAYS!😬

Luckily for me, I don’t consider Lee & Preston without Chavez gloom, despair or agony. PLUS Rori is still a possibility! With Chavez it would be an embarrassment of riches in my book and I’d love to have her in burnt orange for so many reasons. The latter would be a fantastic place to be on March 25th, but Plan B ain’t all that bad (is Laila done btw?)

I'd be willing to bet Laila will be back.

Rori is coming back, Laila is coming back. If Chavez signs up , what are the odds that Preston hits the portal...

She needs the ball in her hands. Rori needs the ball in her hands Chavez needs the ball in her hands. And apparently Booker plays better with the ball in her hands.
You have a 4 yr veteran. A once in a decade phenom. A budding superstar and a kid who has shown " flashes".
Who do you think will get fewest minutes ?

Again I actually KNOW nothing.... pure speculation on my part. If Chavez were to come to Texas, I see her playing off the ball a lot and being a dynamic scorer as a true shooting guard. She and Booker on opposite sides would stretch and require defenses to play us more straight up. This not only unclogs the paint, but also opens up Rori's favorite spots on the floor some more.

Depending on opponents' defensive personnel Vic could utilize any of those three at the top to initiate the offense, and draw up plays for each from there. Having three guards truly capable of those things would be a very good problem to have. Where Preston is concerned, in addition to her playing more minutes next year after some really good summer work, she will inherit Rori's role for her last two years.

There's no guarantee regarding Laila's eyesight returning to 100%, and Jordan is only going to keep getting better also. Let's not forget Crump coming in who will most likely be the heir apparent to Booker.

The days of us worrying about having too much talent in one position need to be long gone. It takes quality depth to get over that hump. You manage that depth the same way national championship teams have been doing. Stack them up, roll the ball out and let them ALL earn their playing time... because anyone who comes to Austin is going to have to do just that.

Will be curious to see if she visits any school this weekend. OU, South Carolina, and Texas all hosting sub-regionals. Tech is playing at Wyoming on Thursday in the WBIT; so, no games in Lubbock for Chavez to attend.

Hope this isn't the case . . .

Looks like it maybe the writing on the wall to me... but who knows? I've been reading for quite a while now that Trae Young's dad has been heavily involved in helping OU recruit her. Young is a Jordan Brand rep, so perhaps there's an NIL offer for her. I can't see Texas offering (to anyone) a bigger NIL deal than what our consensus All-American has.

I never thought she would come, I still don't. Texas doesn't play her type of offense. Why go to Texas and end up like Gonzales, Martharu, Hunter, etc? I think she wants to be the next great thing, so she'll go where her individual light will shine the brightest. IMO. I'll eat EVERY LAST WORD if I'm wrong. :p

I too have never felt it. Her 2 biggest concerns that she has mentioned are 1) playing for a coach her entire collegiate career. Check mark for coach Vick. And #2..A coach that will not change her game...uh oh...
Well you cant miss what you never had. Only issue for me is the perception. Losing out on an instate generational player to an outsider. Especially blowklahoma.

I dont think the comparrison to the 3 you mentioned are vald though.
Gonzalez came in with a bad knee and was asked to do 2 things she never had. Play point guard and line to line defense.
Martharu and Hunter's issues were between their ears.

I know one thing, the facilities and atmosphere at the Lloyd Noble Morgue don’t come close to what Chavez saw at the Texas/LSU game.

Most of the time I have thought Chavez would not come to Texas for all of the same reasons people here mention. But recently I started thinking maybe there was a possibility. I've also been of the mindset all along that we'd be fine regardless. That is still my strong belief.

Personally I thought Gonzalez left a much better player than she came in. Yep.. Matharu and Hunter were both big time head cases just like Chevalier. Just look at their individual journeys after leaving Austin.

Back to Chavez, I think Vic is like Mulkey in that he's not going to play the bidding game. He also fosters a team environment and it appears that the Texas WBB mantra for NIL is that we can put players on a very attractive platform on which to capitalize. But, like playing time or starting positions, that's something that's going to have to be earned and not given... regardless how much hype you're rolling with.

I don't recall any other WBB recruit having their NIL demands public (if the Chavez stories are true). That in itself is seemingly a direct conflict of how Vic runs his program, as you never hear a word about the dollar value of any of our players NIL deals. Vic is apparently teaching life as well as basketball.. it ain't nobody's business how much money you're making. Just like in the professional world, when that stuff is talked about it can cause dissension in the ranks. If we miss on Chavez, maybe we really don't.

Last time I attended the game there apparently they couldn't even afford to pave their damn parking lot. That place is a dump... and a dump that was about half empty for their game today by the way.

She listed several criteria she was looking for in a program. Not sure she ever stated which were her "biggest" concerns. She'd never have been considering Tech if the majority of her criteria were set in stone.

I was actually surprised when Chavez visited Texas for the Florida game the day after (Sunday) her team won the state title in San Antonio. I just figured she'd want to enjoy that one last bus ride home with her high school teammates and continue the championship celebration together for another 8 hours or so.

There was a lot of buzz on social media after she was spotted in the Texas stands. At that point, it sure made most feel that Texas was in a great position to land her. In the back of my mind, I wondered if she'd make any subsequent visits to her other finalists. If she didn't, most would continue to predict Texas as her leader; so, there would go a lot of the suspense leading up to her March 25 announcement.

Not that I like her and the family visiting OU today, but I'm definitely not surprised as it seemed likely to happen in my mind. There will probably be all kinds of posts/opinions out on social media over the next 60 hours or so.

It was in one of her many interviews.
And I agree. Tech would not be the choice for concern #1.

I've always thought we needed to start winning the state of Texas when it comes to recruiting. I think I started reading about Aaliyah Chavez when she was in the 8th grade. Too many players like her were leaving. But I never foreseen anything like this..NIL, etc..
I think to this point Texas has done all Texas can do.
If she choose us it will be a good day to be a Longhorn. She could make us better. If she doesn't I'll be sad but good luck to her.

Didn’t Adrian Peterson choose Blow U over Texas because he wanted to win national championships? How’d that work out for him?
Same thing I see in Chavez. Select the Sooners and see those dreams diminish greatly. If we don’t get her so be it.
We’ll dance with who brung us!!

This is what I posted on July 24 from one of her interviews:

“The most important thing is to make sure I’m in a place where I have high energy,” Chavez told On3. “I don’t want a coach that’s low energy, and I need to make sure that they’re going to be there the whole time [I am]. I don’t want a coach that’s just going to be there for two years… I want them to be there all four years. Because that’s what I’m getting recruited off of, right? I want to be there all four years.”

The next interesting thing to watch (for me) is will Chavez stay at one school during her college career. I think Texas is the best fit for that too.

That, and how much longer Gerlich keeps her job if she doesn’t land Chavez. Of course Gerlich is riding that WBIT wave into Round 2 with another road game at Virginia Tech after winning at Wyoming. There will be no home game for Aaliyah to attend before her announcement on the 25th. That would have been awkward
