on Sam Rayburn............who wants to go swimming? East Texans catch three large alligator gar at Sam Rayburn Reservoir | KETK.com | FOX51.com
Never heard of them attacking anyone, but when I was 11, I was skiing behind our family boat on the Neches River just inside the Rainbow Bridge in front of the Atlantic Refinery. I did a kick turn and went flying across the wake and landed in the water just as a gar rolled over. He caught the fin of my slalom, but I kept going. As my dad said, "you looked like a flat rock on a smooth pond". My dad went back and retrieved the slalom from the gar. He was probably about 6 ft with my slalom lodged firmly in the middle.
Those things are nearly impossible to kill once you land one, other than letting them asphyxiate out of the water. Definitely a holdover from the dinosaur age.
