Against a team that made the tournament last year and won their league. Nobody is going to mistake UIC for LSU but that is still a pretty nice achievement. Pitching and defense baby.
Need the offense to catch up but you cant be disappointed with the start the pitching staff and defense have had.
1 error in 34 innings would have been a pipe dream last season. It was an impressive defensive display, to go along with an occasionally impressive offense. Not bad for the opening weekend. Definitely better than going 0-fer in San Diego.
Jees....this thread title scared the crap out of me....I opened this up thinking that was our run production.
gecko and dborange - well, if you had remembered that we were playing 4 games this weekend and followed the games, you wouldn't have been scared .. I missed following today's game, and I did feel a bit of concern after seeing the 1-0 scoreline. We need to produce better than that. The offense has not set the world on fire yet, though I liked the signs of returning to what we are known for - manufacturing some runs. Looks like Loy again came through, forcing a balk and then scoring on a double to pull off the win... R.J.
I would have been thrilled to get this kind of pitching and defense last year. The hitting will come around.
Austin Dicharry was very good in closing the 9th inning of Friday's game. There were audible gasps when he threw a Kjos-like, hard-bending second strike followed by a laser at the knees to end it. I'm about to Goggle him but if anyone's go any first hand stories, please do tell.
