Hi, I am looking for acoustic, mellow covers of 80's songs to make a CD. I already have: Gary Jules - Mad World Daniel Powter - Just Like Heaven The Outfield - Your Love (even though this isn't a cover, the acoustic version is pretty awesome). Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Huey Lewis' "Power of Love" covered by The Early November. That is the definition of what you are looking for to a T.
How about an 80's cover of an 80's song... Roddy Frame as Aztec Camera covering Van Halen's Jump. Even better than the real thing.
kujotx, if you have that song, please hook me up with it. I'm a big Aztec Camera fan and I've never heard it.
I guess it's almost required that someone mention Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
this is another "cover" by the same singer, but pick up Colin Hay's acoustic version of "overkill" old Men at Work song that's the tits
Unpainted, that is exactly the song I was thinking about. I loved it when he was an Scrubs and did that song. Jules Shear did an acoustic version of a bunch of his songs called Unwrapped. Songs like "If she knew what she wants" that the Bangles covered and some song of his that Cyndi Lauper did. They only pressed about 1500 of these CDs so they are tough to find. I think it is called Unwrap This. Art's suggestions of 80s Stripped is cool. There is some interesting stuff on there like The Motels, Berlin, Howard Jones & Asia. Jane Wiedlins version of Our Lips Are Sealed is horrible.
Check out Nouvelle Vague -- bossa nova covers of '80s songs with sultry female vocals. That is, the covers have the sultry vocals whether or not the originals did. Tons of YouTubage on 'em.
I've always liked Lazlo Bane's cover of Overkill, although only the first half meets your acoustic criteria, really starts rockin' at the end. Linky
rage.... I first saw that on a B-side of a cassette I had from back in the 80's. It was an epnonymous AC album that had some live versions of "Mattress of Wire", "Birth of the True", and some others live versions. It was the last song and was from the studio. It was obvious they included it as a goof. But, it actually ended up being quite good. Here's a youtube link... I will see if I can find the album somewhere...
Ari Hest--Little Lies Pat Dinizio--Behind the Wall of Sleep Both of these are fantastic. The Hest cover is one of my favorite covers ever.
Byran Adam's "run to you" - Lou Barlow Springsteen's "i'm on fire" - Electrelane Jesus and Mary Chain's "Taste of Cindy" - The Shins Black Flag's "Police Story" - Los Campesinos! The Police's "Message In A Bottle" - Leatherface Guns N Roses "Sweet Child" - Luna Kim Wilde's "Kids in America" - The Muffs Pixie's "Gigantic" - Orange New Order's "Ceremony" - Bedhead The Smith's "Bigmouth Strikes Again" - Treepeople Oh, and that Aztec Camera cover of Van Halen's jump is gold
Everything But The Girl did an album called Acoustic that is mostly covers of 80s songs. Time After Time , Tougher Than The Rest (Springsteen), Alison (Costello), Downtown Train (Waits). It is a very good album.
Original: China Rockers - China Cowboy Mouth did a good cover a few years back on Easy. The guy from China Rockers was in the band at the time. Sample link here: The Link
