Iran is a tyranical theocracy. Although they overthrew a hereditary monarch (the Shah), as far as where they are on the map of political theory: maybe they're roughly akin to Louis IX's France when he decided to eliminate the Huguenots, Queen Bloody Mary Tudor's England, Cromwell's Puritan England (or even worse, Cromwell's Puritan-ruled Ireland), or Ferdinand and Isabella's Castille and Leon (Spain right after the Reconquista)--the rise of the Inquisition.
Obviously the Sun King Louis IX partook in a lot more pleasurable indulgences than the mullahs and ayatollahs allow themselves (I think). But, despite his luxuries and forbidden pleasures, that particular Louis rigorously enforced religious conformity and stamped out the Huguenots with a murderous campaign.
Classical liberalism is the philosophy of (most of) our Founding Fathers.
Classical conservatism is monarchism, especially when combined with mandatory and uniform religion, and militarism (think Hapsburg Austria, Louis IX's France, Prussia--not especially religious but very militaristic, Imperial Japan, Czarist Russia). This is the sort of thing (most of) our Founding Fathers abhorred.
