Has anyone ever seen analysis of how Saban uses backups? Saban obviously has a gift for being a head coach and puts a lot into it.

My question is ...how does he still manage to get 4-5 stars to sit backup for 2-3 years? Other programs have problems keeping 4-5 stars when they don't play in year 1. How does Saban so consistently get these kids to ride shotgun for 2 years?

Is he just a better salesman?
Do they work the 2nd string in more effectively/frequently for meaningful playing time?
Or is just because the kids believe they can still get better training and pro opportunities even as a backup at Bama?

I think your last point is the biggest reason. But I am just guessing at what Jalen Hurts thought

Never underestimate the allure of that large piece of jewelry that is perpetually on the horizon for the duration of the time under Saban. For some kids, that may be what makes riding the pine worthwhile...
