Baylor vs. Texas Game 3

For a pretty much meaningless game, there are many factors involved. It's the last game of the regular season, most likely the last home game of the year, maybe the last game at the Disch, for the head coach of Texas. On top of everything else it's Senior Day, for Ty Culbreth, Travis Duke, and James Barton.

It's been a horrible season, with new records falling for futility, with each loss. The latest I have seen is that for the first time in the twenty years of Augie Garrido, as head coach, Texas went through an entire season, without a series sweep. I don't have time to see how far back you would have to go, to see the last time it happened. I did check that 1956 season, which has been referenced for bad things, but Texas swept OU, so that isn't it. Texas lost every conference series in 2013, but swept some non-conference series.

So one last game in Austin, where many pitchers will be used and it will almost be used as a scrimmage, to get ready for the Big 12 Tournament, because every seed is locked into place. Texas needs a win today, to break a six game losing streak and not carry a seven game losing skid, to the Tournament.

Also a loss today would end the regular season at 21-31, which would mean that if the Horns didn't win the Big 12 Tournament, another record would be set, for the most losses ever in a season. At present the 1998 season record of 23-32-1 is the all time worst, so that is something to play for a win today, in addition to Senior Day.

What a disappointing season. It would be nice for the team to go out on a win: last game at home & season, last for the Seniors at the Disch... and perhaps as NBH7 said, perhaps even the last regular season game for AG.

    Baylor starters and more:

Sophomore righty hander Connor Mayes, gets the ball today in the series and regular season finale, with an era of 3.96.

Who knows what to expect in this game, all kinds of pitchers will be used, will regular starters be rested too, what kind of effort will either team have? Time to find out.

Justin Arrington, the Bear second baseman, will lead off, batting left handed. Steven McLean, the usual lead off man, was hit by a pitch yesterday and didn't look healthy, the rest of the game. I think he could probably go, but is setting out, because of the nature of this game.

Arrington steps in and we get underway.
He walks, for a lead runner.

The shortstop is Josh Bissonette, batting righty, with a man on.
He bunts and pops it up to Mayes, for one down, failed sac.

Matt Menard, the Bear catcher, hit righty, with a man on and one away.
One hopper to third and the 5-4-3 double play ends the inning.

Baylor with a lead runner, but no damage, Texas comes to bat.

Baylor will start freshman Kyle Hill, a right hander, on the mound today, with a era of 5.40.

Ty Rand, the left fielder, will lead off as he did yesterday, batting right handed.
A grounder up the middle and the shortstop gets to it, but the throw is late, an infield hit and lead runner.

The centerfielder is Zane Gurwitz, batting righty, with a man on. Texas tries yet another line-up today.
Rand goes and steals second with ease, he can really run.
The count goes full and he walks, to put two aboard.

Travis Jones bats righty, with two on, he plays in right field today.
Rand heads for third and the throw is wide and it's a double steal.
Another full count and a fly ball to left will be a SF and Gurwitz also moves up to third.

    Texas leads 1-0.

The DH today is Tres Barrera, batting righty, one on and one out.
Infield plays back, so contact needed for another run.
Grounder to short and the 6-3 is two down, the run scores.

    Texas leads 2-0.

Kacy Clemens bats lefty, as the Horn first baseman, with two outs.
A liner to right is a single and a two out runner.

The Horn catcher today is Michael Cantu, batting righty, with a man on and two down.
He takes a fast ball on the outside corner, the called K will end th inning.

Texas plates two and takes the lead 2-0, after one.

  7. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Connor Mayes will stay in and pitch another inning, the Bear second.

Aaron Dodson will bat lefty, leading off, he is the catcher today.
A full count and he K's swinging at a high curve ball, one away.

The Baylor left fielder is Kameron Esthay, batting lefty, with an out.
He grounds a single up the middle, for a runner.
    wi
First baseman is Joe Sabatini, batting righty, with one on and one out.
He walks and two are on.

West Tunnell, bats lefty, with two on and one away, he plays in right field in the game.
He takes a fast ball, on the inside corner for a called K, two down.

The third baseman is Ben Carl, replacing McLean today, he bats righty, with two on and two gone.
Yet another fast ball taken on the inside corner, another called K, it retires the side.

Threat averted and Texas leads 2-0, bottom of two.

  8. NBHorn7

Hill back to the hill, for Baylor, in the Horn second.

Kody Clemens bats lefty, as he leads off, for Texas.
He lines a hanging curve ball to right, for a lead single.

Shortstop Bret Boswell, back in the line-up today, bats lefty, with a man on.
He bunts and the sac goes 5-3, the runner to second, one down.

Bottom of the order is Jake McKenzie, playing second base and batting righty, one on and one away.
A full count reached and he goes down on a ball at his shoetops and one hops it back to the mound, the 1-3, is two down, runner holds at second.

Top of the order is Rand, batting righty, with a man on second, two gone.
Grounder up the middle and the shortstop ranges over and the 6-3 will end the inning.

Texas with a threat, but nothing across, so still a 2-0 Horn lead, after two.

  9. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Connor Mayes still pitches, as the third rolls around, probably his last inning.

The Bears lead off with the bottom of the order, in Richard Cunningham, batting righty, as the Bear centerfielder.
A high pop, just far on the third base side, will be one down.

Top of the order is Arrington, batting lefty, with an out.
He lines a high fast ball to left, for a single and a runner.

Bissonette bats righty, with one on and one down.
A comebacker to Mayes and he throws wide to second and a double play becomes a E-1, as McKenzie tried to stay on the bag. Runners on the corners.

Menard bats righty, with two on and one out.
A little nubber to third and the 5-3 second out will score a run.

    Texas leads 2-1.

Lefty hitter is Dodson, with a man on and two away.
Grounder to first and it retires the side.

Another unearned run given up by the Horns, they still lead 2-1, bottom of the third.

  10. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Hill will also stick around and pitch the Texas third frame.

Leading off for the Horns is Gurwitz, batting righty.
A grounder up the middle and it goes over the pitcher's glove and into center, for a lead single, the third consecutive lead runner in the game for the Horns.

Jones, the leading hitter for the Horns, average wise, bats righty, with a man on.
Another grounder up the middle, off the mound and the pitcher to short, the 1-6-3 out is recorded, but Gurwitz goes to second.

Trainor out, the ball went off the pitcher's throwing hand. He takes a couple of warm-up pitches and stays in the game.

Righty hitting Barrera, bats with one on and one out.
Hill doesn't check Gurwitz and he steals third, without a throw.
Grounder to third and the throw home is low, but scooped by the catcher, the 5-2 play is out two.

Kacy Clemens bats lefty, with one on and two away.
Even Barrera is running, as Hill is not good holding on runners, he steals second, the throw late and high.
A little bleeder down the line, on the right side, Hill fields, Clemens runs into him, he stills flips from his knees to first, for the 1-3 out to end the inning. That would probably been an ostruction call on Clemens, if the out hadn't been made.

Three played and Texas leads 2-1.

A little bit surprising is that Mayes come back out, to pitch the fourth, there was supposed to be many pitchers used today.

Esthay leads off, batting lefty, for Baylor.
A fly ball, just on the foul side of the left field line, is one away.

Righty hitter is Sabatini, with an out.
He grounds to second and quickly two gone, on the 4-3.

Tunnell bats lefty, with two gone.
He lines one down the right field line, it just stays inside the foul pole and just clears, for a homer.

    Game tied 2-2.

Carl bats righty, with two outs.
He flies to right and that retires the side.

Baylor ties the game, on the homer, it's 2-2, bottom of four.

  12. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Baylor will bring in the first reliever of the game, in Kody Hessemer, a senior right hander.

Cantu bats righty, leading off, for the Horns.
A liner to center and another lead runner, on a single.

Lefty hitter is Kody Clemens, with a man on.
He squares and lines it toward the pitcher, but doesn't catch it on the fly, Cantu held up, but the throw went to first and wild into right field. It's ruled a single and a E-1, which is totally wrong, should be a sac and an error, more strange scorekeeping, at the Disch, the throw was in time, but wild.

Boswell up with two on, batting lefty.
He walks to load the bases.

McKenzie bats righty, the bases full.
A little pop to second is one away, as the runners hold.

Top of the order is Rand, batting righty, the bases full, one out.
Grounded to short and it's a 6-4 force, the relay late because of Rand's speed, two down, the run scores.

    Texas leads 3-2.

Gurwitz bats righty, with runners on the corners, two away.
Rand will probably and should be running.
He goes and is picked off, but the rundown is just given up, by the second baseman, afraid of the run scoring, that's Little League play there, not trying to get the out.
Rand single up the middle and it serves Baylor right, that rundown give up.

    Texas leads 4-2.

Jones bats righty, with two on and two outs.
He fists one back to the mound on the fly, the third out ends the frame.

Strange innning with strange plays, as Texas takes the lead back 4-2, after four innings.

Nolan Kingham, the freshman right hander, is in now, as the fifth starts.

Baylor leads off with Cunningham, at the bottom of the order, batting lefty.
He K's on the slow change up, in the dirt, the 2-3 putout made for the K, one away.

Top of the order is Arrington, with an out, batting lefty.
He grounds to second, the 4-3 is a quick out two.

Righty hitter is Bissonette, with two down.
He also K's swinging, at the breaking ball, side down in order.

Halfway through the last regular season game of the year, Texas leads 4-2.

  14. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Hessemer is back on the bump once more, for the Bears, in the fifth.

Barrera leads off, batting righty, for Texas.
He lofts a high pop down the right field line, the second baseman comes over and makes the catch, just foul, one away.

Kacy Clemens bats lefty, with an out.
He has a fast ball buzz right over his earflap, most likely for running into the pitcher, earlier in the game.
He walks, but the Bears deemed it worthwhile I guess, the game doesn't mean much to them.

One on and one out for righty hitting Cantu.
He lines a single to lefty, to put two aboard, his second of the game.

Kody Clemens bats lefty, with two on and one out.
A liner to center and the centerfielder has it and for some reason Kacy Clemens doesn't read the play and he is doubled up at second, the 8U-6 double play ends the frame.

Five gone and Texas leads 4-2.

  15. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Kingham stays on and will pitch the sixth, for the Horns.

Baylor will send up Menard, their best hitter, batting righty, to lead off.
He K's swinging, on a foul tipped heater, for one away.

Dodson bats lefty, with an out.
A liner to right is caught by Jones, for two gone.

Lefty hitter is Esthay, with two outs.
A full count pitch comes and he K's swinging, on the low slider, the side down in order.

Bottom of six and Texas leads 4-2.

  16. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Baylor brings in another right handed pitcher, in Drew Robertson, to work the Horn sixth, with an era of 4.50.

Texas will send up Boswell, batting lefty, to lead off.
A fly ball to left and it's one down.

Bottom of the order is McKenzie, batting righty, with one away.
A high pop to shallow left and it's two gone.

Top of the order is Rand, his legs have been responsible for most of the runs today, steals and staying out of a double play grounder.
A grounder to short and a low throw scooped and the 6-3 will retire the side in order.

    After six, Texas ahead 4-2.

Kingham stays in to pitch the seventh, I think Texas really wants to win this game, although I think the senior Duke, will pitch on Senior day, before this one is over.

Leading off for the Bears is Sabatini, batting righty.
He lines to short and it's one down.

Tunnell bats lefty, with an out.
He homered to tie the game earlier, in his last at bat.
A full count reached and a grounder to second and the throw wide at first, the E-4 will put a man on, so many errors this season.

Righty hitter is Carl, with one out and one on.
A liner down the line in left, it's a double, to put the tying runs on.

Bottom of the order is Cunningham, with two on and one out, batting lefty.
    infield stays back.
A single to center and one run scores and the throw home is wide or they had the runner at home, but the game tied.

    Game tied at 4-4.

That's 39 unearned runs on the season, just a killer.

Top of the order is Arrington, with a man on and one out.
Another grounder to second and this time the 4-3 is made, two down.

Man on third and two down, for righty hitter Bissonette.
Grounder up the middle to Boswell, he boots it and another error, E-6, another unearned run, unbelievable.

    Baylor leads 5-4.

Skip out to talk to Kingham, after the errors have unerved him, he stays in.

Menard bats righty, with a man on and two outs.
He sends a fly ball right, the inning finally over.

The shoddy fielding hurts Texas, yet again, Baylor takes the lead with three runs, it's 5-4 Bears, as they stretch for the last time at the Disch, this season.

Robertson stay in pitches the seventh, for the Bears.

Gurwitz leads off, batting righty, for the Horns.
He lines a single, to right, for another lead runner.

Jones bats righty, with a man on.
He squares and and the pitcher fields and throws wide, by the first baseman, the E-1 will put two on.
    This game is ugly.

Righty hitter is Barrera, batting righty, with two aboard.
He squares and a passed ball off the catcher's mitt, runners move up, this is turning into a circus.
A fly ball to center is a SF, to tie the game, Jones tags and goes to third.

    Game tied at 5-5.

Coach out and a pitching change is made.

  20. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

The new pitcher is Joe Heineman, a righty, with an era of 3.18.

He faces Kacy Clemens, batting lefty, with the lead run at third and one out.
He K's swinging, on a big curve ball, the K is a big second out.

Cantu up batting righty, with a man on and two outs.
He singles to through the left side, the runs scores.

    Texas leads 6-5.

Kody Clemens bats lefty, with one on and one out.
He lines a single to left field, to put two on.

Lefty hitter is Boswell, with two on and two outs.
A grounder up the middle and the shortstop just knocks it down, but Cantu scores, on the infield hit.

    Texas leads 7-5.

McKenzie bats righty, with two on and two out.
A roller to first goes 3U, to end the frame.

Baylor gives the lead back on an error and a passed ball, then some Texas hits, after seven the Horns lead 7-5.

Kingham stays on and pitches the eighth, for the Horns.

Dodson leads off, batting righty, for Baylor.
He grounds to second and it is fielded barehanded for some reason, by McKenzie, the 4-3 is one away, that was weird, but effective.

Lefty hitter is Esthay, with an out.
He singles to right field, for a runner.

Sabatini bats righty, with a man on.
He grounds a single through the left side, to put two on.

Skip out and a change will be made.

In comes the senior Travis Duke, on Senior Day, as expected. Not much on the line, but still a big moment for him.

He faces Tunnell, with two on and one out.
A grounder to second and the 4-6-3 double play will end the inning.

A little senior magic, on Senior Day, by Duke, Texas leads 7-5, bottom of the eighth.

  23. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

New pitcher is Kyle Ott, a right hander, will pitch the eighth, for the Bears, with an era of 3.75.

Top of the order is Rand, leading off and batting righty, for the Horns.
He sends a fly ball to right, one down.

Gurwitz bats righty, with an out.
He sends a drive off the left field wall, a double, his fourth hit of the game.

Joe Baker, who came into the game last inning, will bat righty, for the first time, with a man on and one out.
A high fly ball to left and it's two gone.

Righty hitter is Barrera, with a man on and two outs.
A chopper to short goes 6-3, side down,

Texas threatens again, but nothing across, hopefully the last time the Horns will bat at the Disch, this season, Texas leads 7-5, to the ninth.

  24. NBHorn7

    NBHorn7 Pimp Daddy

Freshman right hander is Chase Shugart, he comes and tries to get a save and close out the final game of the regular season.

Mathis comes in to play right field.

Carl will lead off and bat right handed, for Baylor.
Three pitches are taken and all are strikes, the last a slow curve ball, the called K, is a big first out.

Lefty hitter is Cunningham, the bottom of the order, batting lefty, with an out.
He lines a drive to right and it gets out for a homer.

    Texas leads 7-6.

Arrington bats righty, the top of the order, with an out.
He takes a curve ball, on the inside corner, another K is out two.

Last hope for Baylor is Bissonette, batting righty, two outs.
A grounder up the middle, fielded by McKenzie, but he can't get anthing on the throw, an infield hit, puts the tying run on.

Menard, the best Baylor hitter, bats righty, with a man on and two down.
A grounder off Shugart rebounds to second and McKenzie has it and the 1-4-3 out will end the game.

Texas hangs on and wins the last game of the regular season by a 7-6 count, well that was a different kind of game, wasn't it. Back soon.

Well it certainly wasn't pretty, but Texas avoided a sweep of the series by Baylor, ended a six game losing streak, maybe a little bit of momentum, heading to the Big 12 Tournament.

It was kind of a warm-up game for the Tournament, it certainly looked the part, with sloppy fielding and mental mistakes by both sides.

The game goes back and forth and unearned runs abounded, but Texas got the key hits needed down the stretch to take advantage of the errors and pull out the win.

The best moment of the game was on Senior Day, the senior left hander, Travis Duke, comes in and gets a big double play grounder, to maintain the lead, in the eighth.

A big salute to the three seniors, who are Travis Duke, Ty Culbreth, and James Barton.

So that's the regular season, it's been a long and tough one, the record is 22-30. There are still many things that will be decided, in the next few weeks.

First up is the Big 12 Tourney, with Texas having to win it again, if their season will continue after that. It starts on Wednesday, time to be determined, against OSU. See you then. :hookem2::bevo:

I hope that they don't make a run in the conference tournament like a couple years ago. This season needs to end as soon as possible so Augie can either give his resignation or get fired, it's his choice.

I second the wishes of an early conference tourney exit. Another miracle run would do nothing but mask the incompetence, just like last year.

26-25 and 22-30 the last two regular seasons.
48 wins in the last 103 reg season games is failure beyond excuse for retention.
