The defense was bad, but that was not on him (except for his sometimes penchant to not to set the edge/contain on his side). The run game was bad too, hardly his fault. The return games were bad, not on him. The interior OL was bad, not him. The front office was really bad, not him. The only thing good about the 2020 team was Watson in the pass game and a big part of that was his Tier 1 level ability to dodge the pass rush, and get set again.

That video clip above shows how teams run to the other side. But avoiding JJ is just part of that story. The other part is the OLB on that side moves like me (3-4 base). Whitney Mercilus has lost lateral motion -- makes no plays, has no tackles, puts zero pressure on QBs, cant cover and does not set the edge. Somebody keeps stats on that last one and Mercilus is the worst OLB in the entire league on setting the edge -- he just cannot do it anymore. Which means teams can get outside pretty easy on the Texans on the right side of the D. To bring all this back to Bill O'Brien, for some unknown reason, he extended Mercilus (4-year, $54M in 2019). So, even if you released him, there will still be a big chunk of "dead money." They are a disaster.

Maybe, maybe not. Saban is sort of a rehabilitation program for down on their luck coaches.

Saban just wants to prove that the coordinators don’t matter.

    Adam Schefter says --

Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy have begun assembling staffs with the idea that they are prime candidates for the head coaching job
