School board votes to stop hiring from Christian college, says beliefs make people unsafe | The National Desk
Valenzuela, who donned a pair of cat ears and refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance during the Feb. 23
board meeting, said she was very "disheartened" to see the district's contract with ACU renewed.
"While I full heartedly believe in religious freedom and people being able to practice whatever faith that they have, I had some very concerned -- concerns regarding looking at this particular institution, and I think it's a really good time for us to take a moment and really pause about where our values really lie," Valenzuela said during the meeting.
"The school board's recent decision to ban ACU students from serving as student teachers was done for one reason only: our University's commitment to our Christian convictions," an ACU spokesperson told The National Desk (TND) in a statement. "That's wrong, it’s unlawful, and it will only hurt the district’s students."
"To that end, the board unanimously voted to discontinue its partnership with Arizona Christian University (ACU) whose policies do not align with our commitment to create a safe place for our LGBTQ+ students, staff, and community," Gomez-Whaley told TND. "This is not a rejection of any particular faith as we remain open to partnering with faith-based organizations that
share our commitment to equity and inclusion." [Emphasis Added]
