The lesson here is that there is no sure thing except, perhaps, Meyer.

When Harbaugh was hired, few had any doubt that he would succeed, and wildly. And probably less would have hesitated to hire him at Texas, certainly in front of Herman.

He may still make it at MI but I doubt it. I think his place is in the NFL.

 

All this also brings up the age-old question: Who is more important--the Head Coach, or the Coordinators?

ISU - Matt Campbell

Campbell will probably stay put at ISU for now, at least unless and until Big Blue ditches Harbaugh and happens to choose him above many other candidates. Rumors are that the only places he's interested in would be aOSU, Notre Dame, and possibly Michigan, and he's willing to wait it out in Ames otherwise. One source states that he'd even turn down Michigan. Well, if you like where you're at, and they think you're the best thing since sliced bread, why not stick around for a while.

Charlie Butt is too smart to offer him. Stocker? Maybe, but probably not.

 

Just to throw a new name out: Pat Fitzgerald?
He has made Northwestern competitive in the B1G and, from all accounts, is the type of HC that CdC seeks. Also, $5 million a year base salary would be $1.8 million more than he is currently making.

 

He’s quietly built up a good program, at a brainy place that won’t take academically marginal recruits, in a tough conference. Good coach.

 

But, Chop, he's not 200 pounds overweight.

 

I vote for Smart & Final, a wholesale grocer here on the Left coast. And that is the actual name, perfect for our brainiac HC.

 

VH, he’s a good one and if interested, it would be an intriguing choice.

Fleck is another one worth pondering.

 

Those are good coaches, but Northern guys who might either stay where they’re at, or wait for ND, aOSU, or Michigan (or the pros) to come knocking. Then again, Saban came from Mich State.
