Computer file encryption

I read an article the other day about some woman in Colorado who's been charged with some fraud crime, and the prosecutor is trying to get the judge to force her to give up the p password to some files on her computer, which they think has evidence against her.

It surprised me, as I really didn't think you could encrypt something with enough security that a government agency couldn’t open it with a bit of time and effort, or some backdoor way they get software companies to write it.

Without going too IT on me (like discussions of Linux or other detailed CS aspects), what program would people recommend to use for file encryption?

Any other hints about encrypted files? What makes some software good/bad? What password aspects to avoid using?

And just as a data point, how effective is the built in software on portable drives, like on the WD MyPassport series? Is it actually decent, or more of a mom can't find my porn level?

    Thanks,

    For software, just use TrueCrypt.
