I've seen pictures of the cheerleaders and participants coming out of the original pep rally against TCU when the Hook'em was first introduced and they did it similar to Obama's first one above except more of a rounded middle two fingers with the tips of the two fingers and the thumb touching. Back then the two middle fingers and the thumb were positioned to emulate the head of a bull where as today we are only cincerned about the horns showing and the middle two fingers positioned behing the first section of the thumb. I kinda like doing it the old fashioned way but then I still sing, "Hail! Hail! The gang's all here And it's goodbye to all the rest."
At the press conference after the 1978 game in Dallas (we lost), Barry flashed the "Hook Em" to the reporters as he sat down. He was asked what the hell he was doing that for and in typrical dry Barry humor he said "it means we are number one......in both polls". I have to admit that while it got under my skin at the time, I do have to acknowledge the quick wit and humor of the guy. As much as I have always wanted to hate the guy, he is pretty likable at times. Anyone that can get a Democrat elected to a state wide office (Governor Brad Henry), in oklahoma TWICE, aint all bad. (Side note: okla was the only state in the union in which McCain carried every county in the state, all 77 of them).
What's great about Bill Hicks' expression is that, if you ever saw him perform, you know exactly what he is saying (or thinking) as he is throwing up his horns. Stratford HS (Houston) graduate, too. His "Dick Clark ripping off his face to reveal Satan while making it with Debbie Gibson" bit nearly gave me my first heart attack back in 1988. Funny dude.
