Football Fatigue

For most of my life I have been the ultimate consumer of televised and in-person football. Friday, with a kid in band, I went to a high school game. Unless family activities had me elsewhere, I'd watch a college game or two every Saturday (Longhorns and maybe another intriguing matchup) , a pro game on Sunday (Cowboys) and maybe one or two of Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football and Thursday (preference a top 25 college matchup or otherwise NFL.)

I lost my energy for it this week. I watched the OU game and the Texas game on Saturday .... then I wound down flipping channels among PAC 12 games since I was too tired to do much of anything but too keyed up to sleep after the exciting win over Kansas State.

Sunday, I was honestly intrigued by the Cowboys matchup with Green Bay. But I didn't watch, I didn't record it and listened only while I was driving. I just didn't have the energy to watch. It's not a boycott. I'm not mad at anybody over the flag kneeling, standing or whatever. I just had enough football. Kind of feels weird. But it's liberating to have time for cycling, activities with friends, reading.

I stopped watching the NFL well over 10 years ago.

I'll watch a few minutes here and there, and maybe a playoff game, but to me the NFL doesn't compare to NCAA football. Its a combination of finding NFL games boring and a guilty conscience of spending 2 days in front of the tv.

My dad taught us to work hard, so I'd rather be productive on Sundays, even if that only involves playing with my boys, banging on my drums like a chimpanzee, or time with my beautiful bride.

I quit watching each pro sport as they went on strike and don't miss them at all.

I rarely watch any game in which it isn't one of the teams I have allegiance to (UT, EIU, GB). Otherwise, it's sporadically tune in/catch results of other games such as aggy-bama this weekend. Tell you the truth, mowing the yard had a higher priority over that game.

I stopped watching any NFL except the Super Bowl after the last strike. I'm not protesting anything but I lost all excitement and interest in the NFL while listening for months to millionaires fight with billionaires about money.

The same thing happened a couple years later with the MLB strike. The sad part is i used to track stats in the paper and couldnt wait to catch pro games, now i just dont care at all. But hey, i do have more free time.

He he, you beat me to the punch. I've told this story dozens of times over the years and you are the first person I've seen with the same sentiment as me.
