Goodman of Foxsports reporting sources say Gary Johnson will be cleared in the next week or so.

he says "my sources tell me gary johnson will be cleared in the next week or so, probably just after new years".

i don't know this guy or his sources, but that almost sounded like a real update.

His source might as well be Gerry Hamilton on Orangebloods.

Gerry has been saying it will be January 1 for a while, recently suggesting there's a chance he might be cleared for Wisconsin.

Has a reason for the wait ever been given?

Nope. My understanding is the date was set a long time ago, and the doctor wouldn't budge from it.

    Thanks.

At the risk of being labeled Debbie Downer, why do we assume he is going to be cleared if he hasn't seen the doctor yet? Has he already met the criteria, like, "I'll clear you if you can practice for the next month without anything irregular showing up on the heart monitor," or is it just optimism?

I'm assuming it because it's pretty obvious Barnes is expecting it. If Barnes had been more hesitant about the possibility of Johnson getting cleared, I'd feel less certain as well.

I just think this was the game plan all along. There was never any plan to clear him for the start of the regular season. Now, I don't get why he was cleared for practices and the exhibition games any more today than I did back then, but there's nothing I can do about the whole screwball situation. I'll just be glad when he's cleared. Hopefully it works out for him.

Considering the news we received 6 months ago, I consider any amount of time he plays this year a big bonus. It wasn't so long ago that we all thought Gary's basketball career was over. At the very least the chance of him playing at UT seemed fairly slim.

It sounds like maybe the doctor wanted to collect a large body of data over many practice sessions and 5-6 months. With staff monitoring each heartbeat and likely recording it, this gives all – school and doctors – much more to base releasing him to play vs. a couple of weeks data and a few office visits. It may feel like overkill to us fans, but if you've been put on notice a player has a heart condition and it's you're career and his life on the line with your call, it's understandable that they would want to cover all bases.

Those crazy specialists. They have their quirks. If the guy wanted to see, say, two months of data, that obviously would take... well... two months.

Now I have absolutely no basis for this, just my own conjecture, but: I just figured he was cleared for the exhibitions because they were really low stress environments, no incentive for the coaches to leave him even if they saw something go wrong and in game tests for the doctors.

Is it just me or didn't Justin Mason say something right after the Exhibitions or one of the first games about how great it will be to have Gary Johnson back after the New Year (I think he gave a specific date) and then Barnes claim complete ignorance and say, I don't know what Justin was talking about.

    Anybody else remember that?

I am pretty sure it was Damion James who made that statement to Mark Rosner about GJ.

The adjustment at this level will be more on the defensive end than on offense.

It was Damion James who said something at a press conference about Gary being cleared to play January 1, and Barnes sarcastically asked him if they should be calling him Dr. James. This was either before the season started, or just after the season opener.
