I had lunch at Kincaid's in Fort Worth before coming home to Austin today, and was quite impressed. It got me thinking about other burger places. Here are my personal favorites, but I don't know anything about San Antonio, Houston, West Texas, and a lot of other places as you will see. Throw out any other suggestions, because I'm always driving around and would like to try another place. Austin: Dirty's, Sandy's, Hut's Dallas: Burger House, Goff's Waco: Health Camp Longview: The Butcher Shop Fort Worth: Kincaid's Specifically, does anybody know the place in Dallas with the desk-style seats? It was in the original short of Bottle Rocket, if that helps. Another tip, if you didn't know, the ranch burger at the renovated Cain & Abel's is really good, and it would be on the list above, but I didn't think it deserved to be, for some reason.
i really don't understand the fascination you people have w/ dirty's. IMO, that place is nasty and the burgers suck. my vote for best ausitn burger goes to the crown, hands down, and for houston to becks prime.
Fat Bastard is right about Dirty's - it's burgers sucked 40 years ago, and still did when I went back in 1990. However, the clientele & ambiance of the joint is Old School UT. For that, it seems to be a good gathering spot for some of the nostalgia buffs.
My favs in no order are Dans, Huts and Hills Cafe. Also props go to Westgate bowling ally for a damn good burger as well.
Sigh. I have explained it SO many times before. First, you got two kindsa burgers. You got your thick burger, and you got your thin burger (often called a "bowling alley burger." The best thick burgers in town (in no order): Roaring Fork Shady Grove Casino El Camino (I've never had it, be enough folks of taste have recommended it). Best thin burgers (in no order): Mike's Pub Sandy's Dirty's Dart Bowl Dan's Posse Crown The thick burger and thin burger are totally different creatures, and should not be compared head-to-head.
I remember that the meat in the Steak & Shake burgers in 1950's St.Louis were so gawdamned thin you could read the Post-Dispatch through them. Their shakes were so pumped up full of air, they made me fart worse than a session at Jaime's Spanish Village.
In no order, Hut's, Casino El Camino (they are fab) and Culver's. Plus, the frozen custard at Culver's is awesome. There are two in Austin, one north and one south. If you have been there you know the butter burgers are delicious.
'111', you may be thinking of Chester's in SA, they have great burgers and an INCREDIBLE selection of beer. Great Place.
Yeah I do believe that was one of them. Chris Madrid's is the other I do believe, although I have never been. Storm's in Marble Falls/Kingsland/Burnet/Lampasas also has an excellent one, but I opt for the #1 corn dog in the state while I'm there.
The Little Red Barn in Round Rock (on Hwy.79 east of I-35) has damn good double cheeseburgers - greasy, tasty, and filling. For West Texas, Kermit Drive-In (in Kermit) used to have awesome burgers when I was growing up, but I haven't been there in 20 years. And in Austin, Culver's butter burgers are definitely worth a visit there (and you also need to try one of their chocolate malts or milkshakes - out of this world).
Sandy's is really good, I am partial to Dan's/Fran's though. The large double meat, double cheeseburger (with a little tabasco on it) is awesome.
Mikes Grill had the best burgers in Texas by far when it was opened in San Antonio. The former owner is a huge longhorn fan and his son was one of the biggest studs ever.
Sandy's is good. Dan's is bad. Dirty's is bad. If I am drunk at 3 am, it is a Whataburger with jalapenos all the way. That catagory cannot be ignored.
Went to Casino El Camino on the advice of this board and it was fantastic...i don't think that I will go anywhere else for a burger for awhile. Except Wendy's of course that ***** can cook.
I don't eat burgers too often but liked Texas Burger when I got the craving. Pretty ******* greasy though
On the Food Channel I saw a joint in downtown San Antonio that served up a 2lb. burger on a platter with a huge amount of fries. Anybody know anything about that?
I prefer the Big *** burger at the Roaring Fork as the best. Several people have told me about a 1 lb burger that is 9 inches wide at Jacks Backyard on IH35. Has anybody tried it?
I like Top Notch too - been awhile since I've been there. Also, Holiday House in addition to some others that have been posted.
I've been on a burger quest since moving to San Antonio a couple of years ago. I've had Chester's, Longhorn Cafe, Chris Madrid's, Cheesey Jane's, and I had the pleasure of trying Little Hipps and Tycoon Flats before they both closed. Chester's is very much like what you'd get at Waterloo Ice House on a really good day. Longhorn Cafe is ok, but nothing spectaular. Chris Madrid's is cheesey, greasy, and good, but not exactly what I look for in a burger. Cheesy Jane's is quality ground beefy goodness, but it lacks any real flavor. Until I find something better, I'm going to Cappychino's. For a neighborhood bar, they make a tasty little burger, and it's not too far from my house. The burger at 410 Diner isn't too shabby either. I've heard of a couple of other joints that I haven't tried yet. The quest continues.
