Shaw is very arrogant. Odds are Shaw was just another student who wouldn't have gotten into Stanford if he wasn't an athlete. Even then he graduated with a Sociology degree -- not exactly rocket science.
"Looking at the Stanfordrecruitment class of 2009 (this year was quite typical in terms of test scores), the median football player who reported scores got an 1800 out of 2400 on the SAT and 26 on the ACT. Based on university statistics, this puts the football median comfortably in the bottom quartile and likely somewhere in the bottom 10 percent in terms of test scores. Stanford football players are quite smart, but the data suggests they place near the bottom of Stanford’s admits."

Addendum added in proof:

UT Average SAT: 1904
UT Average ACT: 29
Most of Stanford's elite "academic" football players wouldn't have gotten into the UT general population either.
