Can we just take screen passes out of the playbook? We haven’t been able to set a screen consistently for years.

Totally agree, especially with the passes with the receiver running backwards.

Teams do it all the time, some more successfully than others....Agree with your point, it seems to be almost like keeping running plays in the calling, just to keep them honest...

I agree in this game, we played too conservative, especially early. The short stuff worked against WVA with Duvernay but our advantage should be the deep balls with these big WR.
...it did look like the OU Db’s covered our WR pretty well in the mid to deep areas though, and they were sending delayed blitz that worked for them.

Seems Sam's rib problem hurts the long ball....at least two underthrown....

Had Sam had an average game (290 yds passing, 56 yds rushing) we might have won. He had 210 yds passing and -9 yds rushing. He really is not near 100% since the OSU game. The rib affects his running and deep passing. Seems we should have leaned on the RB’s a lot more than we did!

Yet some were spot on, to be dropped by the receiver.

They need to start using AI. Also for the stupid pooch kick-off. Will find out that the probability of throwing a pass to the RB 10yards behind line of scrimmage (actually a flare pass not a screen pass) probably loses yardage on average. Throwing ball down field may be a lower probability of a catch (very small probability) but a much greater yardage gain. Even if you are saying we run these to set up longer passes still has near zero value. So STOP with the flare passes Damnit!!

Well, if we’re going to continue these passes - flare or screen - we need more that one guy out there to block three.

The flare or screen pass, while not my favorite play, has been pretty effective this year, particularly with Duvernay. However, when it was quickly obvious that their D was well prepared for that play, we should have gotten the message and abandoned it.

It seems like speculation to me or making excuses. If his ribs are hurting enough where it restricts running and throwing then it's time for Thompson to step in. But I kind of doubt that he's hurt that bad. Sam has a choice of getting hit in the pocket or getting hit on the Run.

Should have been obvious to the coaches to adjust play calling. With pressure on Sam in the pocket, sacks and missed / underthrown long throws, etc. If they knew Sam's ribs were hurting, run more quick developing shorter pass plays. More slants, crosses, curls, bootlegs, etc.

In the pre-game on radio, Herman said that ou was probably the fastest defense they had faced. If he knew that going in, then it was sheer stupidity (or arrogance) to 1. Call a long lateral 6 yards deep on the first play, which anyone could see was coming from the moment they lined up and then 2. Continuing to call such plays and wide sweeps.

Especially in the second half when they fail miserably in the first half.

Our Words of the Day for the UT Coaching Staff are:

    North and South

That worked. East-West was a losing proposition all day.

9 sacks is not his average game either.

With Duvernay in the backfield. One in four tries was positive.
