...was just watching some LHB clips on youtube and there was that great voice of Wally Pryor... I hope he is doing well...anyone know?
Me, too. I preferred Memorial Stadium where the only thing coming from the loud speakers was his voice.
I thought he was old when I was a kid. My first game in person was '76, Arkansas game. Is he still kicking?
Absolutely great voice for a PA guy. He slipped as he got older, but he was still greatness. Bill Little just does not have a voice for that job, but I think it's kind of an ego thing with him, because Bob Cole's definitely better suited for the job.
Bellmont doesn't do scores over the PA anymore. Any scores, of any teams. There's money to be made over the PA system. If you can make more money blasting people with ads at 100 decibels, why would you give a **** what the patrons in the stands are interested in?
Wally and his brother 'Cactus' were the 'Voices of Austin' for a loooong time. Like a lot of things, memories are all we have.
Just referencing 'quarter' gives me chills... amazing the memories that instantly come back. So special.
Probably been posted but three things I really liked: 1. "John Doe, please meet your Grandmother after the game at Scholtz's" 2. "According to the NCAA rule book, holding occurs when...(5 min later)...I hope this simplified explanation of the rules has made improved your enjoyment of the game." 3. "And heeeeres' the big score! Davidson 20 Slippery Rock.......21!" Or some similar Slippery Rock Score. He was a Texas institution!
I was about 6 feet away from the goalpost when he said, "Will someone get that idiot off the goalpost?" I was telling them that "We're Texas, we don't tear down goalposts." Quarter - Nothing better always about 1 second after smokey went off.
Whenever I went to away games, it always made me appreciate that we had a man of few words -- and a nice set of pipes. Other stadiums had excitable, squeeky-voiced announcers who were always trying to generate some enthusiasm in the home crowd while Texas was kicking their arses. Very annoying. Now we have one of those, although his vioice isn't exactly squeeky.
