Natty Game

Fighting Irish scratched and clawed for that first TD and everything went right. Not going to happen much like that again. ND defense is going to have to make some stops.

ND may not have much more than QB up the middle, which is just going to get the guy killed, and gets predictable.

After rewatching the CFP CG and the OSU vs Texas game, it has become clear to me that OSU players are schooled in how to hold pass receivers. And they are very good at it. When a receiver is on the brink of breaking past the OSU defender, a DB or LB'r, the osu player invariably begins holding.

The receiver is slowed, or stopped altogether, or brought to the ground. OSU pass defenders were the most penalized in the NCAA last year. That is no accident. They are coached, and it has been shown to be true, that fewer points will be scored against them if they interfere with receivers who otherwise would break free for the TD.
OSU got away with plenty of pass interference against the Longhorns and against ND.

If we play them next year in the playoffs, I hope Sark or Del Conte will somehow call the officials' attention to OSU's pattern of illegally defending against the pass.

Interestingly, Kirk Herbstreit actually said during last night's broadcast that osu coached their defenders to hold receivers if receivers were breaking into the open.

The best HS teams do this too, because it's impossible to call every down.

I think rather than telling the officials about it, we should probably be coached to be in better position to also "get away with it" too.

Our last drive against osu, the one where we got into the red zone, osu held, grabbed, tackled our receivers every pass play because they couldn’t cover them legally.
PI was called on osu in the end zone and that put us on the 2 yard line. It was called again and it put us on the 1 yard line. Osu was holding, grabbing, tackling on every pass play we ran—especially egregiously when our receivers were in the end zone.
Refs will not call it every play.
Running the ball when the line of scrimmage is inside the two yard line may be the most effective way to score against a team like osu. And running quick hitting north and south will pay off with out the risks of a big loss that comes with pitch backs.

An overlooked item was the 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Gunnar Helm when his first down signal was interpreted to be taunting.

Maybe a little bit of "butterfly effect" going on, like who knows what play we would have called from the 25 instead of the 40. But the bottom line is that we still got it all the way down to the 1 and then mindfucked ourselves.

Agree we overcame that Helm penalty. You should always be able to make 1 yard in 4 tries.

Lots of teams couldn’t do it against us. Our RBs aren’t elite like the Georgia and Ohio State RBs. (Well, ours were good as pro-style RBs—screens, draws, swing passes, wheel routes, run through wide open holes when the defense expects pass, mastering complicated presnap motions on every play—but power and or fancy jump cuts on the goal line, not NFL good, like Trevor Etienne and those guys.)
