From Jim Nicar’s Twitter: The Longhorn Band and Longhorn Alumni Band held a Texas-size retirement party for UT’s 100-year old Big Bertha and a welcome for Big Bertha II at the UT vs ISU game yesterday. This wonderful photo by Jason Chandrapal.
I couldn't make it down for the alumni band game yesterday. Heard lots of great things from my old friends that went to the game. That new Big Bertha is going to take some getting used to...
Big Bertha was overhauled and given new drumheads only 6 years ago. I suppose they wanted the new BB to debut on the 100th anniversary? I prefer the spoked wheels too, fwiw.
OK, I was just on the phone with my daughter, who was in Texas Drums for the 2016 to 2018 seasons; she explained to me that the wooden shell of Big Bertha was deteriorating with age and was badly susceptible to warping, and it was getting very difficult to maintain the proper tension on the drumheads (with the added threat that the drumheads could rip or split). So the original BIg Bertha was overdue for retirement.
I like the new drum, I prefer the old carrier. Does BB-2 have the university seal on the other side? If not, is it the same image on both sides, or something different? Anyone got a clip of what she sounds like?
My son is in the Purdue All American Marching Band and I am glad that the new Bertha will finally put to bed who has the bigger bass drum.
Farewell, Big Bertha, and we thank you for 67 years of service to the 40 Acres. Following pics are from the 2017 game against San Jose State. (9/9/17) Who is #25? I looked up the 2017 roster but couldn't find this number.
and here's pic I took of Big Bertha at the UT-Tech game in 1983 Notice that the wheel spokes were white, not burnt orange. Also, athletic shorts back then were really short. (see Tech guy in background.)
Clothing styles go in cycles. I bet you could get the short shorts on guys back. You just have to start it! Also, pretty good quality for a nearly 40 year old pic!
Thanks. It’s a scan of a Fujichrome slide, and I had to do a little enhancing to compensate for some slight fading and to remove some dust specks. Fujichrome and Kodachrome slides hold up better over time than most color photographs.
No, thank you. Several years ago I was perusing my high school yearbook (1970s) with my young daughter and she had a fit of convulsive laughter when she saw the pics of the basketball team. (“They really dressed like that? It looks like they’re playing in their underwear!!”)
My drum is bigger than your drum. Band smack My Collie barks louder than your longhorn the Ags might say Anybody want to give this a shot?
So why does Chris Warren III not appear in the online roster for the 2017 season? 2017 Football Roster - University of Texas Athletics Did he become an "unperson" and get written out of Longhorn football history? How Photos Became a Weapon in Stalin’s Great Purge
Don't know. But, zoom in on the pic, and you can see Warren III. And, go to texassports.com, look up the recap, and you will see his scores in that game.
