on the Longview Lobos......defending 6A Div2 state champs and home of Slick Street. My old hometown of Marshall has had a very long history with them and back in the day that old E.Texas District of Marshall, Longview, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Tyler Lee, John Tyler and Texarkana was one of the toughest in the state. 'This is truly Friday Night Lights': To beat state champ Longview, Dallas-area teams will also face fervent Lobo tradition
LH, With a failing memory, I recall an old assistant of OA Phillips calling Bum from Marshall seeking advice because he inherited Permian for a home game. Bum told him to move the game to Saturday afternoon because he thought Permian needed to get their legs back under them. Bum told him he learned from Gene McCollum in 1953, when Coach McCollum beat Big Spring in the State Championship game played Saturday afternoon in Port Neches. It rained all day Friday and Saturday morning until about 11. At kickoff, humidity was 95%, and by the end of the first quarter, the West Texas kids were "dead" in the humidity. (IIRC, Port Neches scored three TDs in the first quarter.) It was humid in Marshall that Saturday afternoon when they beat Permian.
