"During his time as Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator, Mike Yurcich coached several of the most prolific offenses in Cowboys and Big 12 conference history. James Washington, Justice Hill, Mason Rudolph, Tyreek Hill, Blake Jarwin, and Tylan Wallace all were key to his success at various points in his six years in Stillwater.
Those offenses had yearly run-ins with TCU head coach Gary Patterson’s defense. In some cases, Yurcich’s explosive offenses scored with ease against the Horned Frogs. There were other times when Patterson’s defenses made life miserable for the Cowboys in contests with important Big 12 implications.
“Gary’s defenses, his signature is they tackle very well,” Yurcich said Wednesday. “They’re very sound in the secondary. They play with tremendous technique. They know their system very well, and he does a great job of knowing what you’re running. He’s got his system down, whatever that system is. I don’t pretend to know how he does it, but he knows what you’re in and he’ll wreck your blocking schemes.”
“It may look like a good box to run into, but he knows what games to play up front to wreck your schemes and to knock you off, whether it be a zone scheme or whether it be a gap scheme. He knows the stunts to answer and to have less numbers in the box. There’s going to be an extra fitter somewhere, but he’s done a great job every year of disrupting whatever blocking scheme that you have.”
