The steamer Sultana explodes killing 1700, including many expatriated Union POWs. Many had survived Andersonville only to lose their lives on their way home.
This remains the worst maritime disaster in American history.

Hearing all these veterans of DDay and realizing how young they were , how willing they were to go into Harm's way for rest of the world really humbles me.
I am also in awe of how alert and still in life they are even though they are in their 90s.
These brave people walked our talk.

Too bad there are some on here that think people 70 have no place having opinions.

I give Macron credit. He thanked the American Vets and our country for saving France.

On this day in 1941, Battleship Texas was being stalked by a Nazi U-203 and her four 21 inch torpedo tubes under the command of Rolf Mutzelburg on her first patrol from Kiel to St. Nazaire in France.

Nazi Commander's request for permission to fire on the Texas were denied when Berlin is reported to have sent the coded message back that read "Don't mess with Texas".

Battle of Gettysburg. What started as Confederate soldiers entering the town looking for shoes, turned into the largest, deadliest battle of the Civil War. By evening of the 3rd, approximately 53,000 men lay dead on the battlefield. The battle marked the beginning of the end for the South.

50y ago today - The largest explosion in space history as the Soviet N1 Moon rocket Tyuratam collapses back to its launch pad shortly after liftoff.

"On July 3, 1969, on the very eve of the Apollo-11 Moon landing, Soviet engineers made their second clandestine attempt to fly their giant Moon rocket. However, the mission ended just seconds after liftoff with a colossal explosion, effectively knocking down the USSR in the Moon Race, just days before NASA astronauts walked on the lunar surface."

43 years ago today -- Israeli Defense Forces launched the 'Raid on Entebbe.' One of the riskiest and greatest special forces raids in history. They traveled 2,500 miles to rescue 102 hostages from the hands of Islamic and German Marxist terrorists. Operation Thunderbolt, lead by Yoni Netanyahu, created a fake presidential motorcade including a copy of Idi Amin's Mercedes Limo.

The French Revolution begins when citizens and disgruntled army troops surround and then storm the Bastille, then begin its destruction. Subsequently, the monarchy will fall, the king and queen will be beheaded and 10’s of thousands of others will be executed.

Fifty years ago today, Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to set foot on the moon. The event was the accomplishment of a goal that John Kennedy set for Americans in a 1961 speech to land on the moon before the end of the decade. The event was televised worldwide.

Seventy five years ago today, a plot to kill Hitler, seize control of the German government and armed forces, then sue for peace failed when the bomb Claus von Stauffenburg planted in Hitler’s conference room fails to achieve the objective of killing the German Fuehrer and then ending the war.
