Horns will meet Mississippi State (3-0 with a Sunday game vs Maryland); Southern Cal (1-2); and Rutgers (2-1 with a Sunday game vs Georgia).

While Souther Cal and Rutgers are well known, Miss. State is the only one of the trio ranked and only in the AP poll (25th). Both MSU and RU receive votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll. RU also gets votes in the AP poll. Horns should be 2-1 going into this tournament with Miss. State providing the strongest challenge. Texas could come out of this no worst than 2-1 and has a very good shot at going 3-0 in the tournament.

Going 3-0 would be a great confidence builder! But these tourneys are grueling - 3 games in 3 days - so sometimes it is the team with the best conditioning - or best trainers that can keep them going over a 3 days stretch.

The Horns have the potential to win all 3 games - I think they will give it their best shot!

It's surprising to me that Rutgers isn't ranked this year. What's changed? I know they lost Brooklyn Pope, but I thought they've had several pretty good recruiting classes.

They also lost their leading scorer, Epiphany Prince, who decided to forego her senior season to play professionally in Europe.

I think Rutgers was ranked #24 or #25 but lost big to Stanford then dropped out of the rankings.

Miss. State blaseted Maryland to move to 4-0 going into the tournament. Rutgers lose 49-48 to Georgia to drop to 2-2. Neither Texas or Southern Cal have played since Friday. Texas will take a 2-1 record into the tournament while Southern Cal will have a 1-2 record.

There's also a twitter page for the Paradise Jam. The men are playing right now, but I assume that the page will follow the women since Coach G posted the Paradise Jam twitter page link.

    Tx vs Miss State

In the first game of the Paradise Jam Tourney (Reef Division), The Texas Longhorns will meet the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs. In the first game of the NCAA last season, Mississippi State eliminated Texas 71-63. The Horns were held to 30.9% from the field and 28.6% from BTA. The Lady Bulldogs made 40% of their FGs and a meager 18.2% of their 3s. They were outrebounded 41-36 and outscored in the paint 28-18. Other than that, it was a pretty rough and close game with 44 fouls called (23 on MSU and 21 on UT)resulting in 52 FTAs by both teams. MSU was 21-22 on FTs while UT made 23-30. Horns forced 19 TOs and made 20. Each team had three blocks. The Horns had eight steals while MSU took six. It was a tough game for the Horns to lose.

The top four scorers in that game return for the Lady Bulldogs. Three started that game and three have started all four games this season but not the same three. Chanel Mokango (#10, 6-5 Sr. F)was a starter then but has come off the bench this season. Mary Kathryn Govero (#42, 6-2 Sr. F/C) was a reserve in the NCAA game. She is a starter this season. Alexis Rack (#2, 5-7 Sr. G),Tysheka Grimes (#23, Sr. 6-0 G/F) and Armelie Lumanu (#5, 5-9 Sr. G/F) were both starters then and are now. Rima Kalonda (#0,6-3 Sr. F/C) has replaced Mokango in the starting lineup this season so far although Mokango is playing more minutes, scoring more and getting more rebounds per game.

MSU has won four games with the most impressive coming this past Sunday over Maryland, 84-55. Rack leads three players in double figures at 22.3 ppg. She has been the leading scorer for the Lady Bulldogs the past three games. Grimes is averaging 14.0 ppg while Govero adds 11.3 ppg. Lumanu and Mokango are both averaging 9.8 ppg. Kalonda averages 5.0 ppg. Rack is among the top three in nearly all statistical categories. She is tops in steals (13), TOs (20), FGM-A (29-62), 3pt attempted/made and % (18-42, 42.9%) Well, two others are at 50%, having made 1-2 3s. [IMG] She is has made and taken the most FTs (13-16) and is 3rd in FT% (81.3%). Mokango leads the team in rebounding at 9.0 rpg. Kalonda is third at 7.3 rpg. Govero (8.3 rpg) and Grimes (7.0 rpg) are among the top four rebounders for MSU. Mokagno leads in blocks with 10 for the season. No other Lady Bulldog has more than two. Three Lady Bulldogs have between 10 and 13 steals each.

They play at a pretty fast pace, averaging just over 75 shots a game, or just under 2 shots a minute. They play good defense. They are forcing 27.25 TOs a game while making just 15.25. Teams are making a meager 28.4% of their FGs against them and 20.9% of their 3s. If MSU has shown a weak point so far this season, it’s their FT shooting which is 60.7%.

The Lady Bulldogs have 13 players on their roster. Twelve show up on their season stat sheet. Eight of those get double digit minutes per game. Four average between 5.3 and 4.3 minutes per game. It’s a tight rotation.

The Horns are led by Kat Nash at 16.0 ppg. She is second on the team in rebounding at 6.7 rpg. Brit is second in scoring at 13.0 ppg while Ashley tops the team in rebounding at 7.0 rpg. Kat has been outstanding shooting the ball. She has made 56.3% of her FGs (18-32), 100% of her FTs (6-6) and 54.5 % of her 3s (6-11). Brit is right there with her. Brit is hitting 54.2% of FGs (13-24), 71.4% of 3s (5-7), and 80% of FTs (8-10). The only one shooting better from the field than Kat is Kristen who has made 60% of her shots but has only taken 5 shots. AG has really improved her FT shooting. She has made and taken the most FTs so far (11-18) hitting 61.1%, a big jump from her 45.3% last season. AG is the top shot blocker with 13 (4.3 bpg). AT leads with 10 assists although four others have at least 6 assists each.

The Horns have ten players on the roster. All eight returning players are averaging at least 19 mpg. Kat’s 28.7 mpg tops the team. The two frosh, Lauren and Cokie are averaging 12.3 and 16.3 mpg. The starting lineup has been Kat, Earnie, Erika, AG and AT. Horns are holding opponents to 37.7% from the field and 34.1% from BTA.Both teams have started the following players in all the games played to date:

    [pre]Texas MSU

    Ashleigh Rack
    Kat Grimes
    Ashley Govero
    Earnie Lumano
    Erika Kalonda

Both teams like to play take-away with Texas forcing 20 TOs and MSU 27. MSU is especially good at stealing the ball although Rack seems to be TO prone with and average of 5 TOs a game. No other player on either team has more than 9 TOs this season. Kalonda and Mokango will present a tall problem for the Horn post players inside. Mokango abused the Horn post players inside, making 6-8 FGs for 15 pts. I don’t think MSU will find it that easy this time around. If Horns can hit their shots, they should win this game. No question that the Horns will press and get a hand in the face of the Lady Bulldog shooters. Can the Horns get their shots off under the same circumstances? If they can hit close to their season average of 43% from the field, they will be okay. They will have to hit the boards hard because that is what MSU do with their guards especially.

The teams have the same coaches and many of the same players. This should be one of the best games in this tournament. I might just pay $8 dollars to watch this game

Southern Cal’s Women of Troy have a lot of talent, six McD AAs and one EA Sports AA among 13 players. They have had a lot of bad luck, as three players are out with knee injuries, including three HS AAs. They are 1-2 this season, going into their game with Rutgers. They have lost to Xavier (81-71) and to Gonzaga (70-58) while beating Fresno State (68-63) at home.
Like the Horns, the Women of Troy will have ten players suited up. Five players have started all three games for USC: Ashley Corral (#24, 5-9 Soph. G); Hailey Dunham (#3, 6-2 Sr. G); Kari LaPlante (#13, 6-5 Jr. C); Briana Gilbreath (#15, 6-1 Soph. G); and Aarka Hughes (#21, 6-2 Sr. G/F).

Four players seem to be their main scorers: Corral (19.3 ppg), Gilbreath (13.0) and Hughes (10.0) are the three starters in double figures. Christina Marinacci (#00, 6-1 Fr. F) at 9.7 ppg, is the top scorer off the bench. No other player is averaging more than LaPlante’s 4.7 ppg . Corral (6-20, 30%), Gilbreath (1-8, 12.5%), Hughes (4-12, 33.3%), Marinacci (1-5, 20%). and Heather Oliver (#10, 5-10 Sr. G, 2-7, 28.6%) are the only players that have taken a 3pter. None have had much luck from BTA as USC is hitting 26.9% from BTA as a team. Corral’s 43.2% from the field tops the team, aside from two reserves who have hit 2-3 and 1-1 FGs. Corral also is averaging 39.3 mpg while Gilbreath plays an average of 36.3 mpg. Seven of the ten players are averaging at least 18 minutes per game. The USC rotation is basically 7 players deep as two others average just around 4 mpg and the third has yet to play. About the only category that Corral doesn’t top is rebounding. She’s the top FT shooter, have hit 14-15 FTs (93.3%), handed out 12 assists and swiped 9 steals. Her 10 TOs are tied for first on the team. Hughes (6.7 rpg), LePlante (6.0 rpg), Gilbreath (5.3 rpg) and Marinacci (5.3 rpg) provide USC with a solid presence on the boards.

USC’s poor shooting from the field (35.3%) and from BTA (26.9%) makes wins hard to come by. Their ability to get to the FT line and to make those freebies helps to keep them close. They get to the line about 10 times more per game than their opponents and hit a very respectable 74.6% from there. They lost by 10 to #9/10 Xavier and by 12 to a good Gonzaga squad. If they start to consistently hit their shots, they will be a difficult squad to handle.

    Texas vs Rutgers
Horns lead this series 6-5 although Rutgers won the last game 63-49 on Jan. 2 2005. Horns were ranked 4th at the time.

Rutgers comes into the tournament at 2-2. They have lost to Stanford 81-66 and to Georgia 49-48. They had two wins between those losses, beating Kean 85-49 and Boston College 59-53.

In these past four games, the Scarlet Knights have had one change in the starting five. Four players have started all four games: Rashidat Junaid (#43, 6-4 Sr. C); Brittany Ray (#35, 5-9 Sr. G); Khadijah Rushdan (#1, 5-9 RS Soph. G); and April Sykes (#12, 6-0 Soph. G/F). Chelsey Lee (#24, 6-2 Soph. F) started the first three games before Myia McCurdy (#24, 6-1 Sr. F) started the last game against Georgia. Ray (12.3 ppg) and Sykes (10.4 ppg) lead Rutgers in scoring. Monique Oliver (#44, 6-2 Fr. F/C) is third at 9.3 ppg. Junaid tops the team in rebounding with a 5.5 rpg average. Lee (5.3 rpg) and Sykes 5.0 (rpg) are the other two top Scarlet Knights rebounders. Ray (11 steals) and Sykes (8 steals) have just under half of the 39 team steals. Nikki Speed (#11, 5-8 Soph. G) adds 6 steals to the team total. Rahsidat with 10 blocks and Lee with 7 have 17 of the team’s 32 blocks. Ray (17 assists)and Rushdan (13 assists) have 52.6% of the team assists.

Ray and Sykes each have taken just a bit less than twice as many shots as the third most prolific shooter. They are not having a good start shooting, though. Ray is 39.6% from the field and 28.6% from BTA. Sykes is connecting on 36.4% of her FG attempts and a meager 21.1% from BTA. Together, they are 35-92 (38%) from the field. The team has made 97-220 FGs for 44.1%. They have taken 42% of the team’s FG attempts. They are 8-33 from BTA. The team is 13-50. They are responsible for 61.5% for the 3s that Rutgers has made. Both Ray and Sykes are outstanding from the FT line as Ray is 7-8 for 87.5% and Sykes is 6-6 for 100%. As a team, Rutgers is making 73.9% for their FTs.

They play good defense as showed by teams averaging only 58 ppg on them. Opponents only make 32.5% from the field and 30.2% from BTA.

The Scarlet Knights have ten players on the roster. Nine have played in all four games with the tenth, Christine Huber (#30, 6-4 Fr. C/F) playing in three games. Three players play over 28 mpg: Ray (34 mpg), Sykes (28.8 mpg) and Rushdan (28.5 mpg). Six others are averaging in double digit minutes.

Should be another game that prepares the Horns for the Big 12 with the physical play favored by Rutgers.
