I noticed the following players are on the roster, but have not played. We seem desperately short on pinch-hitters and even pinch-runners at times. There is rarely any redshirting done in baseball and I am unaware any injury to any of these players. I have seen Thomas Burbank and Chase Roberts, or others wearing their jerseys, warming up RF. Does any one know the story on any of these guys? I gather-up a little information from the Texas Sports and Perfect Game websites for your review.

    Thomas Burbank | LHP/INF | L/L | 6-2 | 200 | Monsignor Kelly Catholic HS | Beaumont, Texas

High school: Plays under Monsignor Kelly head coach Mark Petkovsek, who played at Texas from 1985-87 and nine seasons in the big leagues…Thomas lettered in all three seasons so far at Monsignor…named Team USA World Cup Best Relief Pitcher in 2014…earned All-District honorable mention in 2015…part of the USA Baseball NTDP in 2016…also earned second team All-District honors that year…earned first team All-District and first team All-State honors in 2017…also a three-year letterman in soccer as a goalkeeper.

Allen on Burbank: "Thomas is a great competitor that helped his team reach the State Finals last year. He is very driven and a hard worker."

Pierce on Burbank: "Thomas has a chance to hit and pitch for the Longhorns. He can create hitting issues as a left-handed pitcher and has some pop in his left-handed swing."

    Perfect Game: No review.

    Chase Roberts | OF | L/L | 5-10 | 185 | Oak Ridge HS | Lugoff, S.C.

High school: Lettered in each of his seasons under head coach Randy Stokes at Lugoff-Elgin High School in Elgin, S.C. before moving to Conroe, Texas, for his senior year…earned All-State honors and was an American Family Insurance ALL-USA South Carolina Baseball Team selection as a junior…won the 17U WWBA National Championship with his summer team, the Evoshield Canes National team…also earned All-State and All-Region honors as a sophomore.

Allen on Roberts: "Chase is another outfielder that is a tremendous athlete and can really run. He is a left-handed hitter that just finds ways to get on base. He throws very well and can play all three outfield spots. He's a very tough, hardnosed kid and I think fans will love the way he plays the game."

Pierce on Roberts: "Chase always wanted to be a Longhorn and this summer his dream came true. I think he'll remind a lot of fans of Mark Payton. He plays at a speed that coaches strive for. The left-handed hitting outfielder is tough and determined and we are excited that he is heading to Austin to become a Longhorn."

Perfect Game: Chase Roberts is a 2018 OF/LHP with a 5-11 195 lb. frame from Elgin, SC who attends Lugoff Elgin HS. Compact athletic build, good present strength. 6.62 runner, very solid actions in the outfield, comes through the ball well with good balance and direction. strong arm with on line accuracy, centerfield tools. Left handed hitter, rotational swing with good bat speed, sees the ball well and hits to all fields, line drive/ground ball contact, speed will be an asset on offense. Plays with energy. Good student, verbal commitment to Clemson.

    Turner Gauntt | C | R/R | 5-10 | 165 | Houston, Texas (Episcopal High School)

Personal: son of Robert and Kristin Gauntt…his father played first base for the Longhorns from 1982-84 while his grandfather, Paul, was a second baseman at Texas from 1956-58.

Allen on Gauntt: "Turner is full of energy on the field and brings with him a very infectious attitude, one we look forward to having behind the plate. Turner is a plus defensive catcher that will be a very productive offensive player. He is a very smart player and takes great pride in making pitchers better while he is catching. Turner is also a great student."

Pierce on Gauntt: "Turner is the son of Robert Gauntt, a former UT baseball letter-winner. He is an excellent student that chose Texas over many academic schools. Turner is a plus defender behind the plate."

    AS A FRESHMAN (2018)
Did not appear in a game during the 2018 season…named to the 2017 Fall Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Perfect Game: Turner Gauntt is a 2017 C/OF with a 5-10 150 lb. frame from Houston, TX who attends Episcopal HS. Slender young build, lots of room to get stronger. Good actions behind the plate defensively, plays with energy, good footwork gaining ground on his throws, has some developing arm strength with more to come, accurate throws, 2.09 best pop time, 2.18 between innings. Right handed hitter, sound hitting mechanics, stays short to the ball and works the middle of the field, shifts into contact and is aggressive, should continue to improve his hitting as he gets stronger. Good student.

The newest face in Texas’ dugout is a familiar one.

Cut by the baseball team ahead of this season, freshman catcher Turner Gauntt has rejoined the Longhorns. Gauntt was in uniform for a 9-6 loss to Texas A&M at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday. His biography has been re-published on the athletic department’s website.

Adding a player during a season is rare, and Texas coach David Pierce said the NCAA had to sign off the transaction. According to Pierce, UT’s compliance department handled the appeal. The waiver was quickly approved.

Texas filed its appeal after freshman Caston Peter injured his finger this past Sunday. Peter is expected to miss three to five weeks, and DJ Petrinsky’s season was already ended by a shoulder surgery. That left senior Michael McCann as Texas’ only healthy catcher.

The unexpected lack of depth at the catcher position is what made the Longhorns’ case unique, Pierce said. Pierce argued that “It’s not like it’s a shortstop that another infielder can go play.” Pierce also noted that Gauntt was still on UT’s campus as a student.
