Port Strike

Strike could start on East Coast tonight. I understand striking for more wages and benefits BUT they are also asking for contractual assurance the ports will never use automation and replace workers.
From Fox news link
"Facing pressure on their ranks, the two unions representing American longshore workers have increasingly opposed automation, agreeing to its deployment only in exchange for job protections for remaining members.
Port managers have responded to threats of work stoppages by appealing to those dependent on the continued movement of cargo: consumers, businesses in every industry and workers at companies that rely on parts and products flowing across oceans.
They have brought pressure on successive American presidential administrations to help broker deals to avert strikes by citing the considerable economic damage that results every time cargo slows."

South Carolina Governor:

States that want to be Right-to-Work states should be able to do so.

States that do not, should be able to pursue their mandatory union policies.

We have seen which side does better.

Both sides will cave and meet somewhere near half-way. The strike will be short, and may even be averted.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is this potential strike different than pervious strikes?

Will this strike cover all ports, or just one region?

For decades, Longshoremen have taken time off from their home port to go work another port, so they will have enough hours to keep their two "cards" active. Houston Longshoremen will take multiple weeks off to go to Long Beach and work enough days there to keep their "card" active. When it is Houston's turn to strike, the Houston members would have an active card and go out to the West Coast and work until the strike was settled.

Has that changed?

Hearing what the port employer association offered seemed generous to me, 50% more wages, more employer contribution to retirement, more time off and they did address automation. The Lomgshore Union rejected it and made No counter offer.

Why wouldn't Biden invoke the Taft Hartley act?

Port of NY/NJ Dockworkers: Over 1/2 make over $150,000/year; 20% make over $250,000/year. Striking for more $.

The guy in the X video is an absolute thug POS.

Dock workers will now be replaced by automation ASAP to avoid this kind of trouble. Unions are their own worst enemy.

77% increase over 6-7 years seems reasonable because if the Democrats win, that still won't keep up with inflation.

I heard this morning they want 70% and a guarantee to not implement automation. And yes, they average over $150,000 per year.

Here's the best Port for the money you can buy. A lot less than $150k.

They will automate wherever the agreement doesn't cover. Business owners won't put up with this for long. Plus, automation allows for the workers that are left to make more money through productivity gains. If not then labor is simply stealing money from every consumer.

They won’t piss off unions before the election.

So Commiela's handlers have decided the potential loss of union members is larger than the number of everyday Americans who will suffer from even higher prices.

Unions break balls when a Democrat is in the White House. The Administration owes them.

Well to be fair the union is asking for this vis a vis automation
"The union is demanding higher wages and a total ban on the automation at ports regarding cranes, gates and moving containers in the loading and unloading of freight."

I don't understand how any business could agree to something like this. Almost every improvement in your processes could be subject to litigation. And what if a competitor business isn't bound by such an agreement? You'll get clobbered.

Some think they have no competition, but they do. Canadian ports, and Mexican ports will eventually automate. Together, the KCS, CN, and CP can take the goods from the Canadian and Mexican ports and put them in the US heartland.

In fact, I think one of the Canadian roads took over the KCS. (So I guess that makes Port Arthur a Canuck colony).
