On paper, the NSDA rejects what Lavender, Gupta, and Sharma are doing. Its
rules state, “Judges should decide the round as it is debated, not based on their personal beliefs.”
To my regret I was not on my High School debate team as I did not know what to expect. Not afraid, just unaware.
In my senior year I took part in a moot debate and was assigned to a team with an opinion opposite mine.
It was a great experience. I saw things from a new perspective, was able to have a greater understanding of other viewpoints and was then better able to defend my personal beliefs.
These judges are out of control. This is why we go to school. To learn new things and be exposed to new thoughts.
