I would agree with most of what he said but I would say this. 1. we didn't lose a war or get defeated militarily. we didn't have military goals. we had political goals. that is typically the issue. our objective evolved from retribution and destruction of capacity, to cultural change. retribution, destruction, degradation...those can be done with power. Cultural change....can be aided with power but ultimately the only way to change culture is TIME...and lots of it. Something we are piss poor at. 2. no society is homogenous. There are/were AFG people that wanted what we had to offer but they were not the majority. The way to approach this is to start a "Hong Kong of AFG" and let the people choose to come to you, rather than trying to impose your rules on their pre-existing structures and institutions. We were battling existing leaders and that meant they were losing power and influence. Of course they are going to resist this. We tried to buy their love with water wells and other small projects, but that was just silly. I used to sit in on lots of interrogations and sat right next to the guy that wrote that "State of the Taliban" report that got leaked in 2011. Almost to the man, they would all say the same thing. "All we have to do is wait you out." They mostly lived in shacks anyway so the difference between with the US, and without the US wasn't that significant to most of them on a daily basis.
