Texas (16-1; 5-1) and TCU (11-6; 3-3) are coming off losses. Texas lost for the first time this season to Baylor, 67-80, and TCU dropped a road game to KSU 4-58. Horns lead the series 36-2. TCU has won the last two home games in Fort Worth. Over the last four games, the teams have split 2-2 with Texas having won the last two games.

The Horned Frogs starting backcourt make up their top three leading scorers. Zahna Medley (# 14, 5-6 Sr. G) is the leading scorer at 15.0 ppg. AJ Alix (# 23, 5-6 RS Soph. G) is second with an average of 12.8 ppg. The number three scorer at 8.7 ppg is Veja Hamilton (# 3, 5-10 Sr. G). After those three, Jada Butts (# 15, 5-10 Jr. G/F) comes of the bench to add 8.5 ppg. TCU is the third highest scorer team in league play at 67.2 ppg. Medley (25-61; 41.0%), Alix (28-59; 47.5%), Hamilton (22-58; 37.9%), Butts (19-42; 45.2%) and Toree Thompson (# 1, 5-10 Soph. G) (12-39; 30.8%) have taken 76% of TCU’s shots. They have combined to make 76% of TCU’s FGs made in conference play. Butts and Thompson give the Horned Frogs continued firepower when they come into the game. Medley (15-35; 42.9%), Alix (17-35; 48.6%) and Thompson (7-25; 28.0%) are the primary 3pt shooters for TCU. Butts at 1-8 (12.5%) is the only other Horned Frog to take more than 3 three pointers in league play. Medley and Alix help TCU rank second in the league in 3pt FG% at 37.0%, just behind Texas’ 38.5%. Alix and Medley are 3rd and 7th in the league, respectively, in 3pt FG%. They are tied for second in 3pters attempted. In conference stats, Alix is first in 3pters made and Medley is tied for second. Medley (25-27; 92.6%) tops the team in FTs made and attempted and is third in the league in FT%. Jordan Moore (# 22, 6-3 Fr. C) is second to Medley in FTs made and attempted at 17 of 23 (73.9%). Thompson’s 10-11 (90.9%) help TCU rank # 1 in the league in FT % at 77.6%.

Caitlin Diaz (# 32, 6-1 Sr. F) tops the Horned Frogs in rebounding at 6.3 rpg. Butts (5.2 rpg) and Moore (4.0 rpg) provide strong support on the boards. Medley (3.8 rpg) and Alix (3.7 rpg) are strong rebounding guards. Alix (29 assists), Medley (27 assists) and Hamilton (18 assists) give the Horned Frogs three players averaging at least 3 assists a game. Moore tops TCU with nine blocks. Destynee Hives-McCray (# 31, 6-0 RS Sr. F) is second with five blocks. TCU is not a big shot blocking team. They are third in the league in steals, led by Hamilton (12), Medley (10), Butts (9) and Alix (8).

Medley, Alix, Hamilton, Moore and Diaz have been the starters for all six Big 12 games. Butts, Thompson and Hives-McCray make up the players that have gotten into all the league games. Three others have seen limited action in Big 12 play: Carol Willie (# 55, 6-2 Jr. C), Sydney Coleman (# 21, 6-1 Soph. F) and Hattie Lankford (# 6-0 Fr. F). Medley (34.8 mpg), Alix (32.2 mpg) and Hamilton (30.5 mpg) log the most minutes per game for TCU. The others that have played in all Big 12 games average between 17 and 24 mpg.

Imani is the sole Longhorn averaging double figure scoring at 15.3 ppg. Three others are averaging at least nine ppg: Empress (9.8 ppg), Brooke (9.5 ppg) and Ariel (9.0 ppg). Ariel and Kelsey (6.8 ppg) are the top bench scorers. Imani (36-64; 56.3%), Empress (18-50; 36.0%) and Brooke (21-45; 46.7%) are the top shooters for the Horns. Ariel (18-28; 64.3%), Kelsey (18-32; 56.3%); Imani (56.3%) and Tasia (7-13; 53.8%) have the highest FG% on the team. They help Texas have the highest FG% in the league at 44.7%. Texas is the top team in the league in 3pt FG% at 38.5%. Three players are hitting over 40% from BTA. Brooke is at 48.1% (13.27). Empress is making 43.8% from BTA (7-16). Ariel has connected on 5-12 for 41.7%. Two others that present a threat from BTA are Celina (5-15; 33.3%) and Brady (3-8; 37.5%). Three lead the way in FT makes and attempts. Imani has made 19-25 for 76.0%. Empress has converted 16-21 for 76.2%. Ariel has made 13-16 for 81.3%.

Celina is tied for third in the Big 12 in assists per game with TCU”s Alix at 4.8 apg. Brooke is second on the team at 2.8 apg. Empress checks in at 1.8 apg while LaShann adds 1.3 apg. Brianna leads the team with 15 steals. Ariel, LaShann and Celina are second on the team with six steals each. Imani’s 26 blocks (4.33 bpg) in conference play top both the team and the Big 12. Kelsey is second on the team with six blocks. Imani’s team and Big 12 leading 13.0 rpg make her one of two players averaging a double double in league play. Briann (5.0 rpg), Celina (4.7 rpg) and Kelsey (4.5 rpg) provide strong support on the boards to Imani’s efforts.

Imani, Brooke, Empress and Celina have six starts in six conference games. Brianna, after sitting out the Baylor game, has five starts in five Big 12 games. Kelsey has one start in six games. Ariel, LaShann and Jordan have played in all six conference games. Brady and Tasia have seen action in five of six conference games. Imani, Brooke, Empress, Brianna, Kelsey and Celina all average between 26.5 mpg (Brooke & Celina) and 21.0 mpg (Brianna). Brady, LaShann and Ariel average in the teens with Jordan just missing that line with a 9.5 mpg average.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game. I am guessing that Brianna will be back after sitting out the Baylor game due to a coach’s decision although Kelsey could start in her place:

    Texas______________TCU
    Imani (6-7)________ Moore (6-3)
    Brianna (5-9)______ Daiz (6-1)
    Empress (5-9)_____ Medley (5-6)
    Celina (5-8)_______ Hamilton (5-10)
    Brooke (5-4)______ Alix (5-6)

Diaz is TCU’s most experienced post player. She is their best rebounder although she is not counted on for scoring as much as she had been in earlier years. Moore is the scorer in the post for TCU. She will be facing primary Imani and Kelsey. A tough matchup for the freshman on either end. TCU’s backcourt of Medley, Hamilton and Alix will play most of the game unless in foul trouble. Their ability to shoot the three will challenge the Texas guards on defense. TCU will try to deny the interior pass and force the Texas guards to hit from outside, something they are doing well this season. Texas’ posts should be able to score inside when they get the ball. For Moore, Diaz and the other TCU posts, not fouling will be important as they need to stay in the game.

    TCU(3-3)_____________________17.3___13.8____19.7_____16.3____-0-_____67.2

Both teams incorporate the three into their game plan. TCU takes about a third (32%) of their shots from BTA. Texas takes one of four from BTA. The two rank one-two in 3pt FG%. TCU does a better defending the three than Texas (26.3% allowed to 32.4%). Texas is likely to look inside first unless TCU decides to use a zone defense. Even then, Texas has shown the ability to be able to successfully attack a zone with penetration and ball movement instead of simply launching threes. Horns should be able to control the boards, including getting second chance points. For TCU, they will look to force turnovers via steals and pressure. Coming off 21 TOs versus Baylor (tied for their second highest total this season), Texas will need to control the ball better to deny TCU those scoring opportunities from turnovers.

Game day is Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2015 at 7 PM. The Horn 104.9 FM will carry the radio broadcast. Fox College Sports is carrying the telecast. Right now, both 374 and 373 are showing ISU vs OSU. Hopefully, one of those two will be showing the Horns vs Horned Frogs game. It will be carried online at: http://www.foxsports.com/foxsportsgo/

TCU is playing very physical basketball, and their new facility is bringing some extra excitement to the players and the fans.

They need to handle tcu's press. And when they break the press the guards need to have good court awareness. Every time the team plays against tcu they will break the press and tcu will come from behind and poke the ball away from the guards. They also do the same thing when the guards are in transition. And when the team is throwing the ball in after a made basket the inbounder has to be alert. Tcu likes to play possum and step in and steal the ball when the team is throwing the ball inbounds.

The guards need to always come back to the ball and the person throwing the ball in doesn't need to throw it to the guards until they do. The same thing needs to be done with the rebounder and guards after a missed shot. Tcu will try to speed them up, they need to play smart and under control and take good shots.

My wife and I are going to the game tonight. We have not seen the remodeled Daniel Meyer court yet (other than on TV). It has always been an excellent arena to watch and play in. I refereed some AAU Southwest Region Tournament 17/18 year old games there a few years ago and it was also a good court for refereeing. I sure hope Taylor is back in the rotation and the team doesn't let the sunday game beat them twice. I hope there are a lot of Horns fans there as the team wont get any vocal help from the wife (aggy). I have a feeling that the Ladies will start a new winning streak, they will win out until the next Baylor game, and then some of the lessons learned can be used for a win in Waco. See ya'll there.

looks like the radio broadcast is a different station from the Horn, which is probably broadcasting the men's game at WVU.

Radio station: 105.3 FM- Roger Wallace (play-by-play), Fran Harris (analyst)

Just sat down - absolutely agree. Sad that UT is so far behind so much of the Big XII when it comes to basketball venues.

Too light but I'm a bit of a traditionalist. Everything else is very nice - no bad seats, very well lit, big enough for a decent crowd but not cavernous.

Horns still not looking like they are on the same page. TCU has five 3s, all open looks. Neither team is getting to the FT line although TCU is 4-5 to Texas' 2-4. Those threes are big for TCU.

Hope our PGs come out on fire. We need some scoring from them. 10 of the 13 FGs we have made are from Imani, Kelsey and Brianna.

What does it take to get these ladies to value the basketball? (I'm not a coach) Some horrible passes floated out of bounds or backcourt in this game.
