Texas comes into Lubbock with an 0-2 conferencerecord while Tech is at 1-1. The Horns will belooking to snap a two game losing streak inconference play while Tech looks to continue a winning streak at home over the Longhorns that started on 02/22/2004. Since Texas’ Final Four team of 2003 beat Tech on a 3pter by Jamie Carey with 26 seconds left on 03/02/03, Texas has not won at Lubbock. Tech will be looking to make it six straight home wins Saturday. In Big 12 play, Tech has four players in double figures, led by Kierra Mallard’s [#20, 6-3 Soph. F/C] 15.0 ppg. Ashlee Roberson [#31, 5-11 Sr. F] adds 13.0 ppg while Tilmila Martin [#14, 5-6 Sr. G] chips in with 12.5 ppg and Jordan Murphree [#13, 6-0 Sr. F] tosses in 11.5 ppg. Roberson is the top rebounder with 8.5 rpg. Mallard (7.5 rpg), Monique Smalls [#23, 5-6 Fr. G] (6.5 rpg) and Murphree (5.0 rpg)provide outstanding support on the boards. Mallard’s six blocks top the team. Five Lady Raiders have taken at least 3 3s in conference play. Mary Bokenkamp [#24, 5-9 Fr. G](2-3, 66.7%) and Martin (2-4, 50%) are the top 3pt shooters. Five Lady Raiders have gone to the FT line in conference play. None is making less than 75%. Four are making over 83%. Of the players on the Tech roster, 8 are averaging in double digit minutes. Three are still averaging over 33 minutes in Big 12 play. Nine have played in both Big 12 games. Mallard, Murphree, Smalls, Martin and Roberson have started both Big 12 games for Texas Tech. Texas is led by three players in both figures: Brit (16.5 ppg), Kat (11.5 ppg) and Ashleigh (10.0 ppg). Ashley leads in both rebounds (7.0 rpg) and blocks (6.0 bpg). Kat adds 6.0 rpg while Earnie grabs 5.0 rpg. Five Horns are hitting 100% from the FT line in Big 12 play. Brit (10-14, 71.4%) leads the team in FTs made and attempted. Brit also has been the best 3pt shooter in conference play, making 5-8, 62.5%. Surprisingly, Texas is second in conference play in scoring at 74.5 ppg. Tech is sixth at 66.0 ppg. Not so surprising, Texas is last in defense, giving up 91 ppg. Tech is eleventh with opponents scoring 67 ppg. Tech tops the league with their FT % of 83.3%. Texas is letting opponents score 51.7% of their shots, last in the league. The Horns are second in 3pt FG% with 37.5% while Tech ranks sixth with their 31.8%. Texas is giving up 51.7% on opponents 3pt attempts, also last in the league. Horns are 9th in the league with their 34.0 rpg. Texas is second in assists (13.0 apg) while Tech (11.5 apg) is fourth. Texas does lead the league in blocked shots with an average of 8.5 bpg. Tech is fourth with 5.0 bpg. Texas leads the league with an average of 10.5 steals per game. Ashley’s 6.0 bpg tops the league. That’s twice as many as Tech’s Mallard 3.0 bpg average, which is tied for third in the league. Projected starters: [pre]Texas Tx Tech Ashleigh Mallard Erika Murphree Brit Smalls Kat Martin Kristen Roberson[/pre] Smalls and Roberson have motors that run all game long and they are fast. Mallard appears to have hit her stride in league play. Horns will have to keep from having a couple of those long scoreless periods in order to pull out the first win at Lubbock for these seniors. This is their last chance to win in the windy city. A double digit win is necessary for salvaging the season thus far. No excuses, and remember Kenya Larkin's stamp in the middle of the floor in Lubbock. We have been down for a while now, but they have had it worse. Texas by 10 plus!!!
We play as well in Lubbock as the Colts do in cold weather playoff games. I am envisioning a big turnover fiasco and an ugly game.
AAS preview. AAS’s Cantu story on the Big 12 and how tough the conference is. From the AAS print edition, their projected starters for today’s game: [pre]Texas Tx Tech Kristen Nash Ashlee Roberson Kathleen Nash Kierra Mallard Britainey Raven Timila Martin Ashleigh Fontenette Courtney Smalls Erika Arriaran Jordan Murphree[/pre] From the Lubbock AJ, their preview.
BabHorn, I love your pre-game rundowns. They are the reason I sometimes check out this forum. But I'd like to make a couple of minor corrections. "Tech will be looking to make it six straight home wins Saturday." Seven. They've won the last six, if you're talking about UT@TTU games. I was going to let that one slide, rather than come on here and look like I was trying to start something. But I wanted to point out a name correction: "Courtney Smalls" It's Monique Smalls. We call her Mo (Like Larry, Moe, and Curly). Let's hope for a good game with no injuries on either side. (Of course, my opinion of a "good game" would be a 20+ point victory for the Lady Raiders. I don't really see that happening. I suspect your idea of a good game might be somewhat different.) I expect another battle. I've seen your team on TV a couple times, and honestly, they worry me.
mggood1, like I said, I copied the starting lineup straight off the AAS and didn't think to check whether they had the right Smalls. I am hoping for a great game for the nation to see but with a Horns win!
Listening to Coach Malone, she talked about someone else besides Kat and Brit stepping up....who will it be? I love for AT or Cokie or Kristen to go OFF!!
OK!! We caught up, but then let down.. Cokie called for foul when it was a tied ball.. Damn HOME COOKIN'
If someone doesn't step up in the 2nd half, e will be 0-3 in Big 12, and a 7th straight loss in the USA. 19 DAMN POINTS OFF TURNOVERS!!
Texas is making Tech look amazing with all the steals and lay ups they're getting off Texas' turnovers. What a mess.
Is it my imagination or do we go thru cycles where we just don't play hard? Stop the turnovers and bring some energy. That was a disappointing first half.
I sure hope that was our bad half. Can't believe how easily Tech is taking the ball away from the Horns. Horns need solid play on both sides this coming half.
