Texas Basketball Practice Notes: Injury Update, Takeaways, Scrimmage Details from SI

Thanks for the article. Good to hear that they're working on lineups and gelling as a team.

As for the Terry statement, I think the jury's out until we see what this team can do against equal/superior opponents.

The article alluded to Pope being able to start but also coming off the bench. He's literally bringing the most minutes/game out of any portal guard with him to Austin, so we're obviously not going to be able to keep him off the floor.

Still a little worried about our depth down low. Kaluma was never a banger for Creighton or KSU. Shedrick is gimpy. Onyema isn't quick enough. Kent wasn't asked to be super-physical for ISU.

Well, when it comes to the tournament, Rodney is outperforming all past coaches except for Tom Penders.

Let's see how he does with players he's solely responsible for recruiting. I hope he does well, but I fear this season will be a disaster.

TRE JOHNSON
SHOOTING GUARD •6'6" | 180 LBS
CLASS OF 2024 @ LINK YEAR | BRANSON, MO

The look on your face when you've seen one too many shows put on by aging acts who have long since run their course in Vegas or Nashville.

Just saw this. I doubt they get out much... for some reason, SW Missouri has become the "hotbed" to send kids for basketball development prep school. Greybear on their roster went to Frisco Emerson. Amare Bynum's dad played for ISU and is in coaching circles. Also has Andre Iguodala's son on the team.

And I thought I was the pessimist on this board.
There are obviously a some RT supporters on here but I have never been one. He has never done anything on his own except a sub 500 record. I also think this will be his last yr as I expect a very tough year for Texas but he was not a good hire after Beard screwed the pooch.

I'll agree that this year is an acid test for RT. If we finish like you say, he will lose a WHOLE lot of support.

I didn't like the hire, but understand that in the situation, CdC's hands were tied after getting to the elite 8. I am in a wait and see mode now. Losing the recruits to professional ball last year was a body blow and scrambling for players in the portal was disappointing given the momentum he should have had. They finished better than I thought they would given the start to the conference play and how bad they looked (I thought they would finish 10-12, hence my pessimism). I think he has a better mix of players this year but who knows if they will come together. Terry will get this year and next unless the team completely implodes. Probably won't be a good look when Barnes and Beard stomp our *** this year.

I friggin love the analytics as much as this guy, but his prediction seems completely linked to Texas not knowing what to do with so many ball hogs. As if... they're just all going to be ball hogs once the first jump is taken?

The volume of three-point attempts that we lost from Hunter and Horton will be taken over by Johnson. He kind of ignores this because it's tough to predict how a freshman will do with that kind of pressure.

He also seems to discount Larry's experience when compared to Pope. Larry was WAY more of a distributor and defensive stalwart than Pope ever was for OrSt.

I think Shedrick will show some noticeable improvement. Plus, this is his Sr year. Remember, he was playing hurt a lot last year. 6’11” guys with good athleticism don’t grow on trees.

The nba folded g-league ignite which was the option for high school players. Probably due to nil. I would guess he didn’t want to go out of the country or he just wanted to play college ball.

Johnson will be our Sydmill Harris. I hope he learns 5 more languages and has a parent who can play jazz.

But really, his role will be launching 3's off the bench and providing a spark where needed on slashing and D. Harris was never a great movement guy, but lordy could he shoot the three ball.

If Johnson can show other dimensions, I'd be thrilled, but if Mark is healthy we're fine at the CG position.

Tre will be the best player on the team. Period. He won't be coming off the bench. Dude is a one and done.

There was a time when I would have agreed with you, but I've seen the practice summaries and how he's been used since he left LHHS. He doesn't have a natural "starting" position because Mark will be playing that CG/SF spot, and Tre isn't a forward.

Surprised no one started a thread about it, but the first game was tonight.

At the half vs. tOSU, we can't seem to stop the ball movement and three pointers. The Buckeyes are 10-17 from three, and just 2-16 from 2-point FGs.

Tre Johnson looks great lighting it up from outside, but he's had minimal help from the rest of the team. Without Mark, the guards aren't leading well. I expected a little bit better from Larry and Pope.

Both teams have 7 turnovers so far. Just sloppy all around.

Shedrick with a negative Hollinger score for the 1st half. Ugh. Not good if he's going to be our only big for the whole season.

We have zero D ability on the blocks. Kaluma was never meant to be a banger down low. This could be an interesting season if we have to play more teams with... you know... guys bigger than 200 lbs or taller than 6'6".
