There is simple solution if the band won't play the EOT at the football games - give their seats to the Longhorn Alumni Band. Their halftime shows with the classics are usually more entertaining anyway.

As I've said before, a bus full of reporters, going over a cliff with two empty seats, is a horrible, terrible waste. Of two empty seats.

How is that news? McCoy, an alum, has an opinion on the song and expressed it to university leaders. Wow! Funny end to the Tribune article. It complains about people and orgs then has to say:

Disclosure: Mickey Klein, Texas Exes, University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at Austin - McCombs School of Business and University of Texas at Austin - Texas Enterprise - McCombs School of Business have been financial supporters of The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that is funded in part by donations from members, foundations and corporate sponsors. Financial supporters play no role in the Tribune's journalism.

I hope those UT people who donated pull support
NOT because it was implictly negative toward Colt but because it was full of lies

Perfect example of if you have an opinion contrary to the “woke” you are wrong and will pay the price. Only their opinion is right and worthy, sad.

Not sure I view it as "good news". I got the email from Scott Hanna last night and was pissed. There is no need for an 'alternate band'. The committee has ruled that the EOT is our school song and there are no racial ties. Play the damn song and be a part of the band and the university.

Here is an excerpt from the email-
"For those who seek other musical options, the university offers many other diverse academic and musical repertoire choices to its students. Beginning in Fall 2022, a “to be named“ University Band will be created for individuals who want to perform in a marching band, with a focus on leading/directing bands and community engagement. The band will be part of concepting the future of bands with the responsibility to identify performance venues and other related issues. The required repertoire will not include traditional university songs".

Horse chit... and I am openly one of the most "woke" posters on this board. Just can't get behind LHB here.

I am completely confused by this. I've known a few people over the years who were in the marching band. I think I remember it correctly that it is an extra curricular activity. If someone doesn't want to participate by playing the music required then why create another band? Just let them sit it out. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Since when did the fight song get accused of being racist? I thought it was only The Eyes of Texas. Guess I missed something. Disband the entire band.

Wait, is this saying there are so many members that do not want to play EoT they can have an entire band? Jeez.
So we go from “Show band of ...” to what, “Cancel Culture Band of Texas”?
How many members are refusing to play? This is ludicrous.

More from the Theatre of the Absurd that is our brave new world of insanity.

There is only one correct response to this issue: You can play the song or pack your things

When will people wake up from this slumber of delusion?

They say the average great civilization lasts about 250 years.
    Let's see 1776-????

If a group of students wants to get together and play...anything at all...why does anyone have a problem with that?

"If you don't want to play the Eyes of Texas, you can leave!"
"OK. We did. And we made our own band."
"NOOOOOOOO, all bands made up of UT students should only be allowed to play songs from this approved list!!"

There goes the Wind Ensemble, the Wind Symphony, the Symphony Band, all four concert bands, any and all jazz bands, percussion ensembles, and every garage band with UT students in it.

My takeaway is that LHB will perform The Eyes and if you want to be in LHB you will be required to do so.

Anyone familiar with the Butler School of Music or any of the various programs and ensembles knows there's a lot of options for students, from Longhorn Singers to the Gamelon ensemble. Having a separate marching band that doesn't perform at official UT functions is fine by me. As long as those wearing the Burnt Orange at games are representing, I'm happy.

Of course, they can go make their own band...to whatever degree and according to whatever rules and limitations are prescribed by the authority, which in this case is The University- and if you agree to attend the school you are agreeing to abide by what they deem best for the overall interests of the school...a concept that seems lost on many and our culture at large today. It is one I believe creates a stable, healthy, and sustainable society and people group.
Outside of this^^^...No, you dont get to make your own band...at least not one recognized as the or a UT official band representing the school.
By the way, you are seeing the results of the antithesis to this^^^^ concept I am promoting all around today.
Everyone being happy, having their feelings and emotions and egos stroked, and pampered like babies to suit their individual selfish and indulgent, adolescent desires and whims...feelings without and prioritized above any real critical thought... leads to chaos, confusion, loss of order, poor quality, shallowness, loss of meaning, and the degradation of institutions...and ultimately a loss of reason and stability...insanity.

The university has dozens of musical groups. I'm not even sure how many. Only a few of them play "The Eyes of Texas" regularly (LHB, Basketball Band, Volleyball Band, pretty sure that's it). The number of bands that play it hasn't changed; the number of bands that don't has increased by one.
"I don't like that song. I'll play other songs instead. Someone else will continue to play it."

"You didn't play my favorite song, you pampered selfish indulgent adolescent baby! <rant continues for another entire paragraph>"

If that's your reaction to someone playing a song different from the one you wanted, someone's definitely acting childish, selfish, pampered, shallow, and so on.

It's lost on you that it isn't just "some song" they refuse to play. Its a song that is huge part of the identity of the university itself. I'm not down for letting misguided misfits erode away the identity of the university.

You are missing a VERY important aspect of this...
It doesn't matter what I think...other than my one voice for what my opinion is worth if I choose to voice it to the school. I'm just a guy on a fan forum voicing my personal view just like you. No crying, demanding, or petulant fits. Doesn't really matter what you and I think. The real issue is when you agree to be a part of an entity whose mission/goals/values go beyond just your own selfish ones....They get to decide what they believe is in the best interests of the larger entity and if you do not like those beliefs/values/views the onus is on you to reevaluate and decide if you would like to be a part of that group or not. It is that way in business, relationships, states, communities, churches, schools, and bands...or should be.
The mentality you support is the same one that fractures and undermines the stability of football teams, companies, cities, states, nations, universities, ...and bands. To say, here are the rules, these are our expectations...when you are an entity with higher goals than the individual and you are doing the hiring or admissions or membership or whatever. ..Would you like to be a part of this or not?....in no way constitutes being childish, petulant, or selfish.
And I think it may be that last one that you are hung up on. It may not be so popular these days, but I still believe companies, groups, organizations, schools, etc retain great liberty to decide what they want qualifications, standards, expectations to be, and my own sense of personal freedom, locus of control, and right to disagree doesnt motivate me to disrespect nor undermine "their" desires, but rather liberates me from any perceived bondage to any group or entity with which I will choose not to affiliate should we diverge on values. I'd be the last to whine, cry, or make personal demands about such matters. I respect their right to dictate terms and they shall respect my right to disassociate myself from them should I choose to do so after weighing the cost/benefit.
You are trying to equate expectations and expected roles of an entity with a member of said entity. They are inherently inequitable and anyone outside of a communist should be able to see and appreciate this.
Again, I'm speaking on behalf of the entity here...not myself. I'm not arguing my personal selfish interests vs the band members...that's the difference.

    Me: "OK fine."

    LHABSOB,

I am considering creating 15-20 new accounts so I can like your post multiple times. I have only had verbal confrontation with Hanna a couple of times, and those were before all this crap took place. I thought then, and think now he is a gutless ***** who has more excuses than he has band members. Unfortunately, his "disease" seems to permeate the fine arts college, the music department, and HIS band.

I have known people who seemed to be crushed because they did not make the Longhorn Band. 52,000 students, minus 19,000 Asians, leaves him 33,000 to find 400 (???) that want and will honor The University and its traditions. I know Hanna is very pleased to throw around his Texas degree, but his Texas Visa, issued while he was still a Louisiana resident, has long since expired.

^And that has already occurred. The ones that packed their bags and left made their own band. Good for them. Good for everyone, really.

Seems like a moving target here. I can't state my position any better than I did in the above^^^long posts.
I do not see this issue in the way you are presenting it, I guess...or maybe I missed something.
    Think we just disagree.
Generally, you accurately describe my view.
I think they are misguided, childish, poorly informed, and acting selfishly and immaturely... and should not be rewarded for it.
Go make a band... but it won't be officially recognized. You don't care? Great.
Doesn't matter now...apparently the university has acquiesced and concedes to your view.
You get points for being able to concisely present your view...and creatively. I respect that.
My arguments require more words and my battery is running low...

After reading my email from The University, it is my understanding that the malcontents get to perform at certain University functions. If they will not uphold the traditions and honor of The University, they should NOT be allowed to participate in representing The University in any way. Let them go play, march, sing, do whatever at a school with NO traditions - maybe Cal State La Jolla
