They're playing the "both sides" card, because it's all they have. The problem is that this isn't a "both sides" issue. The Left immediately assumed he was telling the truth just like they assumed the Native American protestor was telling the truth. What conservative politician or media figures claimed he was lying from the beginning? I don't recall any. I recall questions about some of the problems with his story and calls not to rush to judgment until the facts were known (which were largely denounced as victim blaming and racism), but I didn't see anyone of prominence affirmatively calling him a liar from the get-go. Maybe they did, but I didn't see any.
You can't say "both sides" when one side says "let's wait for the facts," and the other side craps in its pants.
