A proven, winning formula since 1999. OU cannot cover the deep ball. Not under Bob Stoops, and not under Lincoln Riley.
KB, That requires a few things: 1) QB that can read the defense 2) WR that can read the defense 3) WRs that don't run 50 yards downfield for a QB that can throw 35 4) WRs that look for the open spot in the zone 5) A TE that can go deep. OU never covers the TE. As I was told,"we know he's the slowest receiver and we can catch him from behind". Remember when we lined Jordan Shipley up as TE and he went untouched into the South endzone? (Of course we never did that again.)
Also requires an OL that can give the QB 4-5 seconds to survey the entire field. It all starts up front.
The deep balls generally come off of play action. Having an effective running game will freeze the dline and line backers for just enough time to give the QB the time he needs to find the open deep ball.
Also, look how much better we looked in the bowl game throwing deep and over the middle on a much higher percentage of passes than we had all year.
My philosophy in life is to always go deep over the middle. Although, lately it's been Go before you go to sleep or you will not get the deep sleep you need.
