    "Shut up", he explained

Companies claim the new bill will cost them money. The Dems don't want to have to campaign against that in the fall, so Waxman is going to intimidate them into silence.

So someone willing to stand up for their rights and control of their own lives is considered thuggery huh?

nice reponse roger. if only you cared about all those citizens that worked hard for companies all their lives and now their retirement benefits are jeopardized because of this bill. as usual, congress passed a bill without knowing the effects on private business because none of them have ever worked for a business.

how can you be shocked, the dems dont ever pay taxes so how do you expect them to understand the effects of tax laws on private business.

This is really awful. AT&T, Verizon- the SEC requires them to account for and report liabilities. They would be breaking the law if they didn't. For all we know, they may be full supporters of this bill, and have voted a straight Dem ticket. It doesn't matter. They are still required to report its impact.

We're in a recession and the Dems don't want to be tagged this November with a job-killing bill. So Waxman is going to grill these guys, and teach (and more importantly...other companies yet to report the impact) them a lesson. Nothing but our government being used to intimidate the private sector for the good of one party.

The first pic is obviously some loon.

But on the second pic, I would shake that guy's hand and buy him a beer. That is a poor example of a thug, Roger - but a pretty good example of a patriot.

Yes, holding up a sign in an area designated for protest is just a horrible thing to do. [IMG]

I hope Waxman's meeting is public.
Anyone who thinks this aspect of Obamacare is a good thing, causing billions of lost dollars from big companies who'd given retirees a good plan,
please explain how in todays climate this is a good idea.

I am guessing no one will be able to support this.

Getting back on topic, it appears Roma and Roger are just fine with Waxman intimidating private companies into silence. After all, when you are on the side of the angels, pursuing a greater good, all is forgiven. 'Have to break a few eggs, etc.'

I can't think of another reason they would respond with wingnut photos and Frank Rich columns, instead of a discussion of bullying tactics.

Strawman. He is obviously talking about people who had a retiree pharmaceutical benefit that was better than Mediicare, who are now going to be on the Medicare pharmaceutical benefit due to the bill's taxing of said benefits. That's kind of the key here.

You see, to get the CBO report to be favorable, the bill taxes these benefits, predicting an increase in government revenue. Unfortunately, in real life, companies will curtail that benefit, due to the higher cost to them, and shunt people to Medicare...ironically increasing government costs instead.

This is not political posturing. This is real life. In a recession, our government pushed this bill through, ignoring warnings about impacts on employers. It downplayed the financial impact and gamed it through the CBO. It's unpopular, mainly due to carve outs to protect tort atorneys and unions, and the Dems just don't want to have to campaign on it this fall, due to the negative impact.

    bluegrass?
    so You were illuminated by this in the NYT Op;
"In lieu of a public option, it delivers 32 million newly insured Americans to private insurers"

Apparently Dems think by reporting this as often as they can it makes it so,.
The CBO says estimates there will still be 23 million uninsured in 2019The Link

Dont you Dems care about 23 MILLION people?

Can we stop pretending this was done to help people?

One last note, What does it say when Waxman waited until AFTER 6pm Friday to notify the Repub members of the committee he'd sent this letter?

Because on this post, dealing with Waxman's intimidation techniques, you think the most interesting thing to respond to is a t-shirt from some unknown protestor at some unidentified protest.

McVeigh was wearing a T-shirt at that time with a picture of Abraham Lincoln and the motto: sic semper tyrannis ('Thus, always, to tyrants'), the state motto of Virginia and also the words shouted by John Wilkes Booth after he shot Lincoln.[51] On the back, it had a tree with a picture of three blood droplets and the Thomas Jefferson quote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."[52] Three days later, while still in jail, McVeigh was identified as the subject of the nationwide manhunt.

It's always interesting, how similar a certain number of posters most recent post and talking point (and words and phrases) on this board consistently mimics the recent GOP email I've received...

    Coincidence, no doubt...

The Democrats Move from Obamacare to Thugocracy in One Week

    Dear J.,

One week ago, the Democrats rammed their Obamacare bill through Congress over the objections of the American people. As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promised, we're finding out what's in the bill now that the Democrats have passed it. And what's in that bill - now the law of the land - is a massive expansion of government that threatens to destroy American business.

American businesses are finding out that Obamacare will hit them like an asteroid, costing them millions and possibly billions of dollars off their bottom lines. This will negatively impact jobs in this strugging economy. It will make the recession worse. It will hurt all of us.

Businesses are required by law to report any changes in the economic environment that will impact their stock value or their own economic forecasts, and this week businesses like Verizon, AT&T, Caterpiller, John Deere and others reported the facts: Obamacare places enormous burdens on them - burdens that force them into unplanned spending and may even affect the value of the companies themselves. Obamacare is turning out to be nothing less than an assault on the millions of Americans who invest in American companies via 401k and other stock-related retirement plans. If you invest in American stocks or work for an American corporation, the Democrats' Obamacare is an assault on you, your family and in all likelihood, your employer.

Rather than take a second look at their own extreme policies, the Democrats have responded by engaging in overtly thuggish behavior. Late Friday, Democrat Rep. Henry Waxman, who is chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, sent a letter to CEOs of several American companies, demanding that they appear before his committee and testify about their Obamacare-related reports.

This is nothing less than an attempt to silence American businesses that have already reported the impact Obamacare will have on them, and an attempt to intimidate others that are contemplating doing so - even though corporations are required by law to make such reports known. Henry Waxman and the Democrats are engaging in the most destructive behavior to American business that this country has ever seen. We need your help to stop them.

It's time to tell the Democrats to back off and stop trying to intimidate everyone into silence. Please contribute to your Republican Party of Texas today and help us continue to reveal what's in Obamacare, repeal Obamacare, and replace Obamacare with sensible, market-oriented reforms that will help bring health care costs down. The Democrats' efforts are not about reform - they are about power and control. Stand with us now and help us win in November. Help us defeat Democrats here in Texas so that we can stop radical socialist Henry Waxman and the rest of the Democrats.

    For Texas and for Freedom,

Cathie Adams, Chairman, Republican Party of Texas"

TxStHorn, I am not on that e-mail list. I noticed, after I made my post, that National Review also used the phrase "thugocracy". I, however, did not copy it from them. It just seemed obvious to me what was going on from reading the news article on the front page of the Saturday WSJ.

A mugging is a mugging, and no interpretation is needed.

You are free to think I copy posts. I don't. I have one rule in all of my posts- claims must be supported by evidence. If I call a politician a liar, I will give examples. I'm calling the Dem leadership a bunch of thugs, and I have given an example.

I suppose you, TxStHorn, may view the same actions and see Waxman as a principled statesman- a modern day Bryan, even, protecting the interests of the disenfranchised and poor Verizon management retirees from the evil Legrees that would steal their pharmaceutical benefits in order to feather their own McMansions. If so, you should feel free to hope that Waxman has fortune in persuading Verizon, At&T, et. al. to ignore the economic incentives placed in this bill.

According to the CBO this is a true. Are you arguing that it is not? The Link An easier read.

Roughly a third of those uninsured(7 million) in that total are undocumented workers. [see link above] I would imagine you would be screaming and yelling if the plan had them covered.

Of the remainder (16 million), many will choose to opt out and pay the $95 fine (mostly younger people). Others will have an annual income that is too high to qualify for Medicaid but still low enough that they will not be required to buy health insurance.

    Yeah, i do.

How many would be uninsured if the GOP was still in power in 2019? 55 million? Oh, they had a plan, as we were told over and over again. The plan was to insure 3 million more Americans over 10
