Tipping at Poker Rooms in Vegas

What is the typical protocol when it comes to tipping in poker rooms in Vegas? I'm going to play Texas Hold 'em for the first time in a poker room there and was curious the standard. In a cash game, if you win a decent hand, say $50-$100, is $5 to the dealer standard, or is that too low or too high? Also, if the ratio of chips to what your initial buy-in was is significant (say 3-1 or higher), how does affect the tip (and I'm assume you're tipping with the chips you're playing with).

What about in tournament play? Do the dealers essentially get tipped out of the house cut on the front-end buy-in?

Finally, what about the chip runners and hostess and so forth? All standard $1-$2 at a time?

Any advice is appreciated. Going Sunday for the three days at the Venetian--after I lose my *** at poker, I'm going to make it all up on the craps table.

I usually tip $1 for every hand I win. More for a big pot.

$1 a hand is standard. I'll give more for a gigantic pot. Tip the chip runners a buck.

On tourneys, find out how much of your buyin is going to tip the dealers--usually some amount of that fee is being used. Adjust your tip accordingly.

that's a good question. I won a small tournament in vegas (10 people/$50 buy in). I think I got around 300 bucks. Well I was already down about 600 for the weekend at the same casino playing blackjack. I tipped the dealer 20 bucks out of my 300 and she looked at me like I was the biggest cheapass.

I only had 20's so it was either tip 20 or tip 40. i would have given 30 if i had correct change.

The way I look at it though, her employer should be paying her more out of the 600 they already took from me, it shouldn't be on me to pay her salary too. I'm just trying to recoup my losses. I think tipping 20 bucks isn't bad considering i'm still down over 300, but obviously she didn't know that. So I guess my point is, it depends on how much I'm up or down, but I'll try to at least tip 10% if i can.

If you win the hand pre-flop and you were the only action, I don't see much of a reason to tip. You may have just pocketed a cool dollar or two. No reason to just give that away. Or at least is the standard that I've seen.

yeah, no real need to tip on a preflop win, unless there was a 10 raise, 5 cold calls, then you shove and everyone folds, I might tip a buck there [IMG]
