It's overcast with some mist in the air, as Texas tries to achieve the series win and a winning record for the first time, in the young season.

Righthander Connor Mayes, who faired well last season, as a true freshman, gets the start. It seems that unless something drastic happens, he will be a fixture in the starting rotation for Texas.

As he has done all series, the second baseman Justin Jones will leadoff batting left handed.
Usually a strong offensive weapon, he is still wearing a collar for the series so far. May that continue to after this series is over.

Jones steps in and Mayes gets the go sign from the home plate ump and the game begins, as light rain starts to fall.
A full count and he blows a fast ball righty by him swinging, the K is one away.

Kyle Isbel, bats righty and plays third base, with one down.
He slugs a bunt toward second and it's a good one, Clemens at second tries to shovel it first out of his glove, but not in time. It's an infield single.

Payton Squier is in left field today, bats lefty, with one on and one down.
He grounds a single through the hole, on the left side, that puts two aboard at first and second.

The DH is Cory Pool as he hits from the right side, two on and one away.
A one hopper to third and Jones has it then touches the bag at third and goes to first, but the throw is high and ruled safe there.
Augie comes out thinking that the runner at third may have interfered with Jones, it's ruled he didn't. Jones still should have made the throw for the DP.

It's a 5U force for the second out.
First baseman Nick Ames will step in from the left side, with still two on and now two gone.
Another full count and the runners will have head start and another walk loads the bases.

Catcher Andrew Yazdanbaksh bats righty, he has good power. Bases loaded and two away.
The count goes 3-0, then a ground ball to short goes the easy way 6-4 for a force to end the rally.
Interesting, but he got a fast ball and has had two homers in the series.

So Texas escapes without any damage and comes in to take their hacks for the first time.

Wow, good for Mayes to get out of the jam, but poor poor POOR situational hitting by Yazdanbaksh. Even Barry Bonds would take a pitch in that situation

The starter on the mound today for the Rebels is senior right hander Ben Wright.

Zane Gurwitz will again leadoff for the Horns and is once more playing center.
A ground ball to first and the 3U is the first out of the day for the Horns.

Bret Boswell, the Texas shortstop, bats lefty with one down.
Another grounder on the right side, the first baseman cuts it off and feed the covering pitcher, for a 3-1 out two.

Patrick Mathis, plays right field and bats lefty. He got his first hit yesterday, homer against the wind to the deepest part of the yard.
There it goes again, this time an oppo job to left center. Love to see that, took a fast ball the other way with power too.

Catcher Tres Barrera bats righty with two gone and one in.
He lines a drive to the right fielder and that retires the side.

The blast by Mathis puts Texas on the board, they lead after one 1-0.

Wright take the hill again, as the Horn second starts.

Michael Cantu is the DH for Texas and he swings righty, to leadoff.
He has alwasy been selective and he walks for a lead runner.

Kacy Clemens bats lefty and is on the bag at first again today.
He is up to bunt Cantu along.
He squares and lays it down, the 1-3 sac is successful.

One down and Cantu in scoring position for Kody Clemens, batting also left handed and one gone.
A liner to left center and it falls just in front of Allen, Cantu with a good jump, comes around to score.

    Texas leads 2-0.

Another freshman in lefty fielder Ty Rand will be the third straight lefty hitter, with one away and one on.
Clemens takes off, a ground ball to second goes 4-3 as he moves to second.

Travis Jones gets his first start and at bat of the season, batting righty, with one on and two down.
He lines a single to right and Clemens is plated as the throw is wide and by the catcher. Its a hit and an error on the throw.

    Texas leads 3-0.

Gurwitz back up, at the top of the order, batting righty with one on and two gone.
A ground ball to second will end the frame.

Mayes comes back for the third, with a good working lead now.

Leading off for the Rebels is lefty hitting Justin Jones, at the top of the order.

Isbel bats lefty with one on.

The runner moved to second on the play.

Righty hitter Pool bats with a runner in scoring position with two outs.
A hard shot liner is picked just off the field turf by third baseman Jones, to retire the side and keep the run ledger clean for Mayes.

Bottom of three and Texas up 3-0.

Wright stays on for his third inning of work.

Texas leads off with the two hole hitter, Boswell batting lefty.
A high pop to left center and it's a can of corn for one gone.

Mathis pops one to center and Allen takes a step back and then can't recover and it falls in front of him. Mathis doesn't stop and legs it into a double on a head first slide ahead of the throw.

One down and one on at second for Barrera, who need to get going with the stick, batting right handed.
He walks to put two on.

Cantu, with a walk his first time up, bats righty with two on and one away, as Texas attempts to play some add on baseball.
The count runs full and a big hook is taken by Cantu for a K, he was frozen by that one, probably looking fast ball.

Two down and Kacy Clemens up lefty, with two on.
Need a the clutch job to plate something now.
Another curve ball and another K looking, that retires the side in a promising scoring inning.

Three innnings played and Texas leads 3-0.

I could not believe he actually took a swing. Scary start to the game, but I have liked what I have seen since.

Edit: I post this and 10 seconds later Texas makes a stupid error.

Mayes stays around for the UNLV fourth.

The Rebel lead hitter is lefty hitter Ames, who walke in his first trip.
A high pop to center and Boswell is called off by Rand and then he can't make the play, a freshman mistake.
It's ruled a single, which is proper, but it's a mental error that puts him on.

Yazdanbaksh, bats righty, he of the 3-0 bases load grounder in the first, to get Mayes out of a jam.
He skies one to right and it's the first out.

Vanmeetren bats lefty, with one on and one out.
He lines a single over Boswell, to put two on.

Rodriguez bats righty, with one out and two on.

Mayes will try and go one more and qualify for the win, as the UNLV fifth begins.

He faces the top of order in the still hitless Jones batting lefty.
A full count and walks after nine pitches.

Here comes Skip and he has a hook with him
Still a good outing for Mayes, he struggled with command and mechanics, but hung in there, as he always does. Too many pitches though.

    Pitching change.

Lefty senior is Travis Duke coming in for Texas.

He faces lefty hitting Isbel, check that as Cooper Esmay with pinch hit for him, from the right side, with one on.
A ground ball to third and it goes to second and then a wide throw to first pulls Clemens off the bag, Clemens thinks he stayed on, he may have, it was that close.

    So it's a 5-4 force, one down.

Squier bats lefty with one on and one down.
The runner goes and is easily gunned down by Barrera, two away.
A ground ball goes to second and the 4-3 retires the side, as the crowd, good naturedly rides the first first base ump, for saying that Clemens stayed on the bag this time:smile1:

Halfway through the rubber game and Texas keeps getting out of jams to keep ahead 3-0.

    Wright pitches on for UNLV.

Gurwitz, at the top of the Longhorn order leads off against him, from the right side.
A liner to left center will plug the gap and Zane stands at second with a double, the cenerfielder cut the ball off, on a slide to prevent a triple.

Boswell bats lefty with a man on second.
    He may bunt him along.
He doesn't, but pulls a grounder to second to move the runner to third, on the 4-3 out, good at bat.

Mathis bats lefty with one down and Gurwitz on third.
Need some contact, to plate another run and help put this game away.
The infield comes in and a full count is reached.
He walks, they didn't want to groove one there and it sets up the double play.

Barrera bats righty with runners on the corners and one out.
Barrera has a cut lip it seems and has to be attended to before he can bat. He gets it and step in.
He smokes a liner to center by the pitchers head and into center for a rbi single.

    Texas leads 4-0.

Cantue bats righty, with two on and one down.
UNLV must be shorthanded in the pen, can't believe they are leaving Wright in.
Another full count for Cantu with multiple runners on, just like his last at bat.
A ground ball toward the hole is cut off by the first baseman, he goes to second a bit wide, but the shortstop holds the bag before falling off it. two down on the 3-6 force.

Runners on the corners and two down for lefty hitting Kacy Clemens.
Looking for one big hit to put this game on easy street for the Horns.
On a full count deliver he rifles a shot to right for a hit and another run scores.

    Texas leads 5-0.

Finally the coach comes out removes Wright.

    Pitching change.

The new UNLV pitcher is a big right handed freshman Chase Maddux, the son of the former Atlanta Brave pitcher Greg Maddux.

He faces lefty hitter Kody Clemens with still runners on the corners and two away.
Never hurts to add some more.
A grounder to second and the 4-3 will end the frame.

Texas puts two more on the board and takes control of the game 5-0, halfway through the final game of the series.

Another of the young talented arms Nick Kennedy, a lefty will come out to pitch the sixth. Another guy that can really bring it.

Pool leads off against him, to lead off for the Rebels.
A roller to Boswell, the 6-3 is out one.

Ames bats lefty with one down.
Another grounder goes to second and right through the wicket of Kody Clemens, for an E-4.

One on and one down, or the righty hitting Yazdanbaksh, who has shown some good pop.
This time he takes a curve ball for a called third strike, on the inside corner, for a K and two outs.

Vanmeetren bats lefty with one on and two down.
A ground ball barely sneaks through the right side for a single to put two on.

Another freshman looks really good and to the bottom of the sixth and Texas leads 5-0.

Here comes Morgan Cooper out for his first appearance, after Tommy John surgery. This a key piece of the puzzle for Texas. He will be slowly worked back in. He was excellent till the surgery.

He faces the nine hole hitter Allen leading off for UNLV.
He blows a fast ball by him, for a swinging K and a good start.

Top of the order is Jones, batting lefty and still 0 for Austin, as we used to say.
A high pop behind the plate and it stays in play and Barrera has it, for two gone.

Esmay bats righty with two outs.
He blows him away with another heater, the K retires the side in order.

Welcome back Morgan Cooper, we sure are great to see you back! He could really make a big difference.

UNLV brings in another pitcher in lefty Corey Wilson.

Boswell leads off batting lefty, for the Horns.
He flies to left and it's one down.

Mathis, who bats lefty has really looked confident at the plate today, taking good swings and has two hits.
The catcher botches one third strike, which cost him the call and then Mathis swings at one out of the zone to K, it evened out, for two gone.

Coach out and he wants another arm.

    Pitching change.

The latest hurler for the Rebels is right handed Larry Quaney.

Barrera steps in the right handed side of the box to face him, with one out.
A full count and walks on a pitch just a bit outside.

Cantu bats righty, with one on and two down.
He turns on an inside fast ball and lines it over the third baseman and down the left field line.
The left fielder can't pick it up and Barrera scores on the rbi double.

    Texas leads 6-0.

Kacy Clemens bats lefty with Cantu at second and still two out.
A blooper to center falls and Cantu comes around to score.

    Texas leads 7-0.

He flies out to center to end the frame.

Coop is back out for the UNLV eighth.

Squier leads off batting lefty for the Rebels.
Cooper saws him off, as much as you can a metal bat.
A little sqibber back to Cooper goes 1-3, for the first out.

Pool bats righty, with one gone.
He skies one high to center and Gurwitz sort of misjudged that and had to come on hard go down to a knee to get it, but it's two away.

Ames bats lefty, with two gone.
He walks on a high fast ball, for a runner.

Yazdanbaksh, is up again batting righty.
A ground ball deep in the hole on the left side, Boswell with the sliding stop, then rights himself and guns it to second for a inning ending 6-4. Nice play there.

Probably all for the day for Cooper and a very good return for him and a good omen for the Horns, in the future.

Texas leads 7-0, to the ninth.

Right hander Christian Myers, with a side winding delivery takes the hill for the Rebels in the bottom of the eighth.

On a full count pitch he grounds to short for a 6-3 first out.

Jones in the nine hole bats righty, with an out on the board.
He lines a drive to the fence in left, it's a double and his second hit, another bat that has struggled looks good today.

    This brings another pitching change.

To the ninth and Texas three outs from the victory and series win, they lead 7-0.

Freshman right hander Chase Shugart, will make his second appearance. He has the closer role right now, in a deep staff.

He faces the bottom of the UNLV order, as Vanmeetren will lead off batting lefty.
A slow roller to second is a 4-3 out one.

Max Smith will pinch hit for the Rebels, from the left side.
Another ground ball to second and it's wash, rinse, and repeat for two gone.

Another pinch hitter is righty hitting Vince Toarmina.
He K's looking and Shugart puts them down quicky in order.

Texas wins the game 7-0 and the series 2-1, righting the ship after losing the first game 4-3.
