Texas fires former QB Vince Young from part-time job

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas has fired former star quarterback Vince Young from his part-time role as a development officer for poor performance and often being absent from work or not in touch with his supervisors.

The move also comes after Young had a second drunken-driving arrest within three years on Feb. 4.

Young’s March 1 firing letter says he was dismissed “for not demonstrating significant and sustained improvement in the performance of (his) job responsibilities and failing to maintain standards of conduct suitable and acceptable to the university.” He has been given job warnings dating back to 2017.

The Associated Press obtained the letter and Young’s personnel file through an open records request.

Young declined to comment Saturday. His file included several good performance reviews and a February letter from Young saying he’d done good work for the school building relationships with donors.

Still not quite hit the bottom, apparently, unfortunately. I think that without this cushy job, he may really come unhinged.

Pissed away $30+ million dollars. Two DWIs. Fired from a ********/cushy job. I'd say he has already come unhinged! The guy is a train wreck. UT has bent over backwards for Vince. Enough is enough. So sad.

I agree that he needed to be fired. I’m just saying, as an observer, he may go further downhill at this point.

Anyone can feel free to disagree. I was pissed the day he said he was going to the NFL. I didn't care about his NFL career. Staying his senior year would have been a likely Heisman and second NC. He would likely have been at a different team in the NFL. Life may have turned out much better for him. He blew it. Dollar signs lured and as stated he pissed those away.

Selfishly, as a Texas fan, things would have been much better for me as well had he stayed for 2006. Imagine, beating Ohio State 2 years in a row, annihilating OU, etc. Man, what a let down.

Not saying the termination may not have been warranted, but you DO realize that all that is on the record for the February incident is the arrest. There is not a Complaint that has even been filed in Fort Bend County. As of this weekend, the case remains in the 'unfiled' status, although there was a recent letter of representation submitted by local counsel (not one of the more 'profile' local DWI specialists either).

That the misdemeanor Complaint has not yet been filed is somewhat interesting considering that one generally sees those within a few business days of an arrest. Even if this were something where they were waiting on blood tests, a filing is still typically entered since the State can always upgrade the charge if the test shows a BAC over .15 (which allows an elevation of the charge).

True, but it could have been worse. Say he tore his ACL in game 1 against UNT. Or could have been better if any year he learned personal finance....

KB is right. This is so sad. I know any of us would help him if we could. But it starts with him and sadly he is not at that point yet.
Maybe we and going back to high school they contributed to his problem.
I just want the best for him.:vy:

What if he tore his ACL in his first NFL game? I mean what ifs can be put forth all day long. Agree with your second sentiment about personal finance.

Hate to hear this news, but it sounds like the University bent way over backwards to help Vince and he didn't respond. If that's the case, the U didn't have much choice but to terminate. Very sad.:smh:

I agree. Everytime I have thought a person has hit rock bottom, they manage to find an even lower level.
