Has any African leader, other than the colonial leaders, voluntarily ceded power?

a few - Mandela for one - but then South Africa is still a one party state.

Great article in this week Economist on Zimbabwe's neighbor Botswana.

    The Southern Star

If Mugabe finally does give up his dictatorial rule and allows Tsvangirai to take over, will his cronies in ZANU-PF accept the Big Man's decision?

Sad that it dragged out this long, but this could be Mugabe's greatest gift, belated, to the people of Zimbabwe.

it might be his best chance to walk away without being prosecuted......I guess ruling to the death his his best chance to avoid prosecution...this is his second best chance.

He's probably managed to save a little money over the years for retirement.

My first thought on seeing the thread title was it was a Franco riff.
Good use of old thread as history lesson.

None of the media reports I saw on this mentioned he was a Marxist, nor anything on his political/racial beliefs
